Paterson On MTA: We’re Moving Toward A Deal
Gov. David Paterson emerged from a closed-door meeting with legislative leaders this morning and said that they are working toward an MTA deal today.
But Paterson wouldn’t disclose what the outstanding issure are among he and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, and Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, D-Queens.
“We are down to a few last details and just which choices we’re going to make,” Paterson told reporters. “And we hope to address this issue as soon as possible.”
Paterson defended the secrecy of the process, saying disclosing details of the private discussions could upset rank-and-file lawmakers and scuttle any agreement.
“What I’m trying to do is shut that process down and hold the fares at a reasonable increase and get rid of the concept that we are going to have any serious service cuts,” Paterson said.
