More budget blues from Paterson

Posted by: Jay Gallagher - Posted in Uncategorized on May 20, 2009

_ State tax revenues are likely to fall short of projections this year by $3 billion, meaning more cuts will have to be made in state spending, Gov. David Paterson said today.

“There will be further cuts,’’ Paterson told reporters. “We’re going to have to start thinking about what more cuts there will be.’’

Paterson’s comments came on the heels of a report from Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli that found that tax revenues for April, the first month of the state fiscal year, were almost $250 million below projections.

Paterson said he is likely to call the Legislature back into session later this year – as he did last year – to deal with a hole in the budget. Or, he said, it is possible that lawmakers could act before the end of the regular legislative session, now slated for June 21.

No rush, guv. Give everyone the summer off, then Labor Day you can all look at the mountains of debt. Matter of fact, you have Thanksgiving coming up, so no sense getting into it before then. Oh, then there’s the Jewish holidays and Christmas, hmm. Maybe start after the New Year when everyone is fresh. By then you can add another 6 billion dollars to the 15 or so billion in debt, and your legislature will decide that real cuts and lessening the 200,000 state nepotic workforce will only lead to more unemployment, and they can just double the State tax, eliminate mortgage deductions for the homeowners, and hope for the best.

Did Paterson actually say: “We have to START thinking…?” When will THAT be, one wonders.

  4. Ethical Problems

this gov has some ethics problems that are
just starting to leech out.. it will interesting
to see what the fallout from this will be…
malcolm smith as gov? please no!

Paterson will soon be wishing he had asked Dad and Percy for that job as MC at the Apollo Theater where he could also serve as the usual overpaid board member of numerous taxpayer funded hospitals and various other organizations dependent on State funding. The old days of inconspicuous cupidity and discount motels must seem appealing in retrospect.

FIRE ALL THE ECONOMISTS WHO COULD NOT FORCAST THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN. NO REASON FOR THESE HIGH-PAID DOLTS TO BE COLLECTING ANYMORE OF OUR MONEY AFTER THEY FAILED US SO MISERABLY.

  7. PATRICK

THE ECONOMIST ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE TO PROPERLY BUDGET REVENUE STREAMS. “PROJECTIONS” ?

I WANT TO KNOW THE NAMES OF THE PEOPLE WHO SIGNED OFF ON THESE REPORTS. THEY DESERVE TO BE FIRED. IF IT’S A FIRM, THEY DESERVE TO LOSE THEIR CONTRACT. SIMPLE AS THAT.

TIME TO RESTORE COMPETENCE TO GOVERNMENT.

the fish rots from the head down.

    fire the economists? yes.

but fire the governor while you’re at it. november 2010.

Terrific point. A $3 billion short-fall doesn’t just happen. The economy started to slip late last summer. This is indicative of a lack of oversight in the Executive Chamber.

From the budget office to the Governor’s office, nobody is minding the store.

Instead of budgeting responsibly with real figures, the legislature was misled. Not that Paterson would have been able to stop their spending-spree anyway.

But now he has to use the c-word again.

Cuts to health care. Cuts to jobs. Cuts to services. Cuts, Cuts, Cuts.

This was not legislatively or politically prudent. I predict Paterson’s approval in the high teens by this summer with disapproval in the 80’s.

He will not run again. He can’t run again.
