Yonkers GOP hopes to settle lineup tomorrow
The big showdown between contestants hoping to carry the Republican banner in the City Council President’s race in November comes tomorrow night. That race, between Councilman Liam McLaughlin and fellow lawyer and first-time candidate Jim Castro-Blanco, tops the list of three party council nominations up for grabs.
In the race to fill McLaughlin’s 4th District seat, there are now four contestants after John Rubbo, an aide to Mayor Phil Amicone, resigned from that post and announced his candidacy last week. Also in that contest are Dennis Shepherd, Gerri Esposito and Ronald Volino. In the 6th District, long-time community activist John Larkin is facing Anthony Merante
The Republican nominee in the council president’s race will face Democratic incumbent Chuck Lesnick.
The Democrats filled out their ticket in late April, picking Wilson Terrero in the 2nd District, where there is no Republican opponent; Mario DeGeorgio in the 4th; and Ted Winnicki in he 6th. Though a Democrat, Terrero supported Amicone for mayor two years ago.
Tomorrow night’s convention at the Asbury United Methodist Church on Scarsdale Road may not be the fi8nal word, however. Republican chairman John Jacono said there was a good chance that at least one of the 4th District candidates run a primary contest against the convention winner and would not rule that possiblity out in the City Council President’s contest.

This should be an interesting Convention and Election 2009! Geri Esposito has done more for the Republican Party than any of her Republican opponents. Dr. Ronald Volino is too rich to understand the needs of the residents of the 4th District! Why is he putting his big toe into this race. He should stick to clipping toe nails, and counting his money in the bank from all the rents he collects from the new Walgreens on Yonkers Aveune, and he owns the property that the Clairmont Diner is on, and he owns the gas station. He’s Phil Amicone’s sidekick. Like I said, this should be a very interesting election year.
Dan,
Maybe people would check your site out more if it was updated regularly. You have 1 new post a week.
Anyone else see how Nick Spano has sold the republican line to Amicone’s candidates for a job for Nick’s brother John? What a disgrace! Now Nick wants the commercial real estate listings too. Nick is a greedy, greedy man. Yonkers residents are getting tired of his antics and this is going to hurt Mike Spano’s run for Mayor.
All of these Primary’s are not good for the GOP. Conventions don’t always guarantee that the other candidates will drop out. Especially if the convention vote is close.
Hopefully the leadership of the Chairman and others will help thin out the number of candidates.
Otherwise, the Democrats will have a terrific opportunity to run a General Election campaign from Day 1 while the Republicans must run for a Primary and then a General. Not good.
john “empty suit” jacono gets his marching orders from amicone/spano.
Phil Amicone’s hands are dirty and so is his mouth. He thinks he can make fools out of women in Westchester County Politics but, more than one woman has said he’s a snake in the grass, a serpent in the bush. He acts like he owns the women that work for him, he’s always demanding kisses. What’s up with that? Did anybody ever hear anything like that or experience him doing that in city hall? I know he got a lap dance or two at Sam Zherka’s place downtown, when they were associates, but, does he act like a gigolo in the Mayor’s Office too? Just Curious!
