Dissident Democrat explains why

June
9

Sen. Hiram Monserrate, D-Queens, issued a statement today on his reasons for supporting new leadership in the Senate. (In a hostile takeover yesterday, Sen. Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County, became majority leader and Sen. Pedro Espada, D-Bronx, became president pro tempore of the Senate. Espada and Monserrate elected to support the GOP in a house with 32 Democrats and 30 Republicans.)

   Here’s what he said:

“I am a proud member of the Democratic party and a major supporter of the Democratic State Senate Campaign Committee. As such, I am proud to use my vote in the State Senate to support democracy. Yesterday, on the floor of a Senate that has become the symbol of dysfunction and secrecy, I cast a vote to support an agenda of reform.

“For too long, residents have called for reform with nothing more than lip service as a reward. At a time when technology and communications are allowing for more transparency and citizen involvement, we have created an environment of cynicism that has moved the work of governing this state farther and farther behind closed doors.

“This reform agenda takes the first steps toward real change. I ask the residents of New York to remember that change does not bear a party label. Rather, its hallmark is providing the leadership necessary to do something different, something necessary. The reform agenda that I supported, rather than a specific party leader or personality, has the power to make this a brand new day in Albany by creating, for the first time, the framework of a bipartisan leadership structure.

“Over the next few days, we will begin work on a legislative docket that does not consider the merits of a bill author’s political standing, but the merits of the ideas that can move New York forward amidst some of the most daunting challenges our generation has seen.

Please know that I remain committed to representing not only my constituency, but all 19.8 million New Yorkers. Thank you.”

    his girlfriend first?

I kinda laugh that his motion to institute reform was to re-install the very majority leadership that has held the Senate for years. this is a powerplay with political pay offs. Nothing more. What a chump this guy is.

  3. Doofus

This guy is a real cut-up.

He’s lying about this just like he lied about cutting his girlfriend.
