Republicans — And Espada — To Hold Session Today
Republicans are preparing for 3 p.m. session as Gov. David Paterson at 3:30 p.m. will roll out his proposed legislation that he wants lawmakers to consider when he calls a special session tomorrow.
It remains unclear whether the sides can get a deal before the special session, or even if the special session would be legally conducted under, as Paterson proposes, Chief Judge Jonathan Lippmann.
The sides met with Paterson this afternoon, but slipped out a back door to avoid the gaggle of reporters waiting outside the governor’s office.
Sen. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, told reporters that Democrats continue to seek a power-sharing agreement and could agree to let Sen. Pedro Espada, D-Bronx, the Republicans Senate president, serve in the post for one day and then let Democrats have it another day.
Republicans do not appear ready for that deal, putting out a news advisory on their plans for session today, which includes an active list of 74 bills and 23 bills that would extend sales-tax rates for a number of counties and cities including: Westchester, the city of Yonkers, Cayuga, Delaware, Livingston County, Oswego, Onondaga, Schenectady, Orange, Greene, Tompkins, Genesee, Ontario, Essex, Yates, Madison, Herkimer, Wayne and Lewis.
Meanwhile, there is speculation that Democrats want to bring Espada back into the conference.
