GOP Reaction: Pick Will Create More Chaos

July
8

From Sen. Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County:

“Governor Paterson took an oath of office to uphold the state Constitution. By attempting to appoint a Lieutenant Governor, he is violating that oath and acting illegally and recklessly.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and many legal scholars have said the Governor’s actions are illegal and unconstitutional. The Governor is clearly putting his own political future ahead of the best interests of the public.

The Governor’s action does nothing to resolve the month-long gridlock caused by the Democrats refusal to acknowledge the leadership changes that took place on June 8th or their refusal to agree to a long-term,bipartisan Senate operating plan.

One thing the Governor will accomplish is that he will create even more chaos that will result in more lawsuits and more government gridlock.
The Governor has said that he expects his decision to be challenged in court. He is right. I agree that the courts ought to expedite any legal challenge so that this does not distract from the effort to put in place a bipartisan operating plan that allows us to pass bills in a legal fashion.

The Governor has said that any legislation passed in special session can only be considered legal if the Assembly was also in session and passing the identical bills.

Richard Ravitch has no legal authority to preside over session and doing so only delays our ability to reach a long term resolution that allows us to get back to doing the people’s work.”

    What. Dean Skelos? And you have not been acting in reckless disregard of New York State by enabling Pedro Espada to dictate terms of a power sharing deal for the senate. He should be run out of Albany, Long Island, and New York State. Richard Ravitch has infinitely more gravitas than all of the New York State Senators combined. Moreover, Andrew Cuomo was far too quick on tthe draw to label Gov. Paterson’s selection as unconstitutional. AG Cuomo was a little too concerned about someone getting a leg up on his claim to pick up the Gov mantle should Paterson step aside rather than run for a full term as Gov.

    Uh, don’t think so. The man is almost 80 years old. Nice try, though.

    Paterson and Ravitch went up the hill
    To fetch a pail of Senators.
    Paterson fell down and broke his crown,
    And Ravitch came tumbling after.

    Up Paterson got and mansion did trot
    As fast as he could caper;
    And went to bed to mend his head
    With Smith and Silver.

    Espada came in and did he grin
    To see his revolt plaster;
    Mother vexed did whip Smith next
    For causing Paterson’s disaster.

    Now Paterson did cry and Ravitch did resign
    But his tears did soon abate;
    Then Espada did say that they should play
    At see-saw across the state.

    No More Schumer
    No More Pelosi
    No More Rangel
    No More Engel and his Million Dollar Home in Maryland
