Espada pledges support for reforms

July
9

Here’s the text of a letter that Sen. Pedro Espada, D-Bronx, wrote to his Senate GOP colleagues today, explaining that he was rejoining the Democratic conference and pledging that he would continue to support the reforms he and the 30 Republicans put into place when they staged a leadership coup June 8:

“Several weeks ago we collectively began our historic, unprecedented journey for reform government to insure that 62 Senators would be empowered so that all of us would have the ability to serve the constituents that elected us to represent them in Albany. My commitment and belief remain steadfast in the events leading to our historic vote of June 8th. I deeply respect and sincerely appreciate your support during this journey, and I will need your continued support even more in the new reform Senate —a new Senate with greater resources for Republican members and reforms that will empower all 62 Senators.

“I assure you that I have the unequivocal and absolute support of the entire Democratic conference for these reforms, which will be announced during the course of the next sixty days. Under this new Senate, I will serve as Majority Leader of the entire Senate. In this capacity, I look forward to working with all of you every step of the way to show the 19 million residents of New York State that we have achieved the reform, coalition government we set out to achieve on June 8th. Together, we will insure that these reforms are not just articulated, but realized for the benefit of the people who elected us.”

“1984,” “Brave New World,” “Animal Farm,” “Elmer Ganrty,” and “Catcher in the Rye” all rolled into one magnum opus. I guess this is why the old time teachers had us read all these books in HS so that we would know what to expect when we grew up. We all learn that the main problem with growing up is that when it happens, you look around, and there really are no grownups – it was always fiction.
