Stalemate Over, Espada Returns

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Jul 09, 2009

The month-long Senate leadership standoff ended this afternoon when a Democrat who worked with Republicans in a June 8 coup said he will return to the Democratic conference.

Under the agreement, Sen. Pedro Espada, D-Bronx, will return to the Democratic conference as majority leader. Former Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, D-Queens, will be Senate president, and Sen. John Sampson, D-Brooklyn, will be conference leader, the senators announced.

Espada said he is returning to the Democratic conference after he and senators agreed to enact reforms that would more equally share resources between Democrat and Republicans.

“It was never about power, it was about empowerment,” Espada said at a news conference.

With Espada’s return, Democrats will have 32 votes, breaking the 31-31 stalemate. They were expected to start passing bills later today.

Guess no one needs or wants Ravitch any longer. He can go back and finish his steak at Peter Luger’s where he was sworn in over cocktails. Nice legacy he’s left for himself at his age, getting involved with any of these bozos in Albany.
