LaFayette Looking For New Role With State Democrats

Gov. David Paterson’s announcement yesterday that state Democratic Committee chairwoman June O’Neill will be stepping down this fall and serve as chair of the executive committee means that Westchester County chairman Reggie LaFayette will be leaving as executive committee chairman.

LaFayette said he was not bothered by the change, saying he talked to O’Neill and incoming state chair Jay Jacobs about the moves when Democrats held their spring convention recently in Rye Brook.

LaFayette said he expects to maintain a leadership role within the party. Party rules dictate that the top two committee posts must be shared between and a man and woman. So with Jacobs as party chair, LaFayette’s position had to go to a woman.

“I’m the chair of Westchester, and I sit on the national committee which I hope to remain,” LaFayette said. “I’m not bothered by it.”
