Councilman calls for Rivers to step down

August
14

Mount Vernon candidate Samuel Rivers should pull out of the race for City Council following allegations that he was found drunk with a gun poking out of his waistband, Councilman Marcus Griffith said today. Read more about the incident here.

Griffith, who is running for City Comptroller, held a press conference today calling for Rivers to step down. He also said Maureen Walker, his opponent in the Democratic primary for comptroller, should “disassociate herself from the candidacy of Samuel L. Rivers.” Griffith said Walker and Rivers had shared a nominating petition.

Here is Griffith’s statement: “It is an embarrassment to the people of the city of Mount Vernon that someone with a lengthy record of contact with law enforcement is on the ballot for the upcoming primary election for city council candidates. It is time for Sam Rivers to withdraw his candidacy for the city council. In addition, in the interest of the safety of all law-abiding citizens, I ask the Westchester Department of Public Safety to permanently revoke any license that Rivers has to own or carry a handgun. Furthermore, I call on Maureen Walker to disassociate herself from Sam Rivers. Ms. Walker clearly enjoyed the benefit of these signature totals in her effort to qualify to appear on the ballot for the primary election and while she was not at all implicated in any of Rivers’ criminal behavior, her association with Rivers further erodes the already tarnished reputation of the Mount Vernon Comptroller’s Office.”

This does beg the question as to what Judge authorized a full-carry permit for Mr. Rivers. Moreover, is the standard so low that someone like Mr. Rivers can acquire a full-carry permit or did the Judge just have a lapse of judgement?

    Something worth looking at here.

Exactamente! What in hell is going on?

  3. jerr

more importantly why is it that a candidate for district
attorney tony castro appears to associate consistantly
with those who a. carry guns and b. seem to get arrested
sam zherka carried a gun into city hall in mount
vernon and was arrested (what ever happened to the case)
now sam rivers is arrested and is found drunk in the
street with a gun…are these the sort that any candidate
for chief law enforcement officer should be palling
    around with?

More important is the fact that Rivers is claiming this was racially motivated.

This is truly evil in light of the serious racial issues that this country has experienced. To claim that race played a part in this is just preposterous and immoral on it’s very face.

Rivers owes the police and the community an apology. Frankly he owes the African American community an apology as well for using a serious problem as a front to avoid facing his own personal failures.

We all make mistakes but people need to own up to them. Blaming your problems on others is a disgrace, at best.

This is just the beginning of what promises to be another brutal election season. It has been horrible for the last 2 years with all the mud slinging and manipulating, over what? Our money? While all of this fighting is going on who is worried about the residents? Doesn’t anyone see that our kids ae watching? It seems like everything connected with this administration, be it current or past affiliations, has some real issues. Before it was fighting to get control. Now that they have it, they’re fighting each other and the public.

Councilman Griffith sounds like opportunist, Instead of dealing with the incident, he use the opportunity to try and down his opponent, who had absolutely nothing to do with the incident coming out of city hall. Was he speaking for himself or someone else? I understand that Walker had enough signatures on her own so what does Rivers have to do with Walker? With a “lil bit o luck” the city will survive the craziness.

what is going to be brutal about this election season will
be the demise of the influence of the independence party
and its chairman and the demise of the influence of sam
zherka and his newspaper…tony castro who is the proxie
in the democratic primary and who is subsidized by zherka
and handled by zherka’s employee blassberg, will get crushed
in the primary and will be left on the ind line all by
himself…the original theory was that a three way split
with difiore on the dem line and castro on the ind line
and schorr on the consv line would help defeat difiore
zherka and cavalo being the brilliant political strategists
that they are (NOT)..thought that somehow castro on the IND
would pull dem voters away from difiore leading to
a schorr victory..that of course was foolish thinking because minor party candidates don’t pull from any one
line…the garner votes from lots of places..and when a
candidate is only on a minor line they get far less a
percentage of the total vote which serves only to reduce
the universe of voters left to chose between the republican
and dem candidates on their own lines…however now, with
difiore also getting the conservative line, Cavalo has
bragged that he is going to give castro the IND line
how can he do that…you ask…run tony for judge on the IND
line and leave the line vacant..this power move will do
only one thing. reveal Cavalo to be a zherka ally and in
zherka’s pocket…the voting public will be disgusted by the
move and will take it out on schorr..who will have no
idea how to deal with it….once cavalo makes his move
schorr will also be tied to zherka…thats called
    check mate

    edelman = broken record

The man, right or wrong, speaks the reality of politics, not the morality of same. That is another topic entirely, a conundrum that will never be solved because of the inherent cynicism and inconsistencies necessarily included within the word’s definition.

some things bare repeating..over and over until the
general public gets it…..nothing is more important
than preserving the integrity of the two party system
    nothing!

  10. jeff

and now the US attorney is involved..good luck

“Councilmen Calls for Rivers to Step-Down?” Step-down from what? There’s no height to step down from. Maybe he could, and should, step- aside.

  12. The Real Hmmmmm!!

Here are the Top Ten Laws That Samuel Rivers Has Broken:

    1)Threatened to Kill a Woman

2)Threatened to Kill a woman with a gun (with a weapon is a separate crime)

3)Rivers has failed to acknowledge on his campaign financial reports substantial financial backing he receives from various individuals and entities tied to one individual, Sam Zherka. That is a clear violation of NYS Election Law.

    4) Rivers violated New York Election Law (during the 2009 petitioning period June/July 2009) by offering and paying campaign workers who collected petition signatures wages that were based on the number of signatures they obtained. This is a misdemeanor under New York Election Law Section 17-122(4).” New York Election Law Section 17-122(4) expressly forbids payment to the petition carriers on the basis of the number of signatures obtained, and doing so constitutes a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.

5)Committed Grand larceny by stealing over $1,200 dollars (Christmas funds…how low) from a bank he worked at.

6)Was arrested over a month ago for driving with a license with over 13 violations

7)Was arrested several years ago for driving without a license or insurance and he hit another person. Had to pay restitution

8)Clearly forged several signatures on his petitions. Violation of Election Law

    9) Has filed numerous intentional false police reports and law suits for political purposes.

    10) Impersonated an assistant District Attorney on lohud.com under the blogger name “onelove, onevoice”

but what does that say about zherka and his puppet
    castro
