Dave Spano calling it quits in county exec race

August
18

David Spano, the son of the county executive is giving up his bid to oust papa Spano. In a message left today with columnist Phil Reisman (read his blog here), David said he wouldn’t be delivering the required signatures to get on the ballot in the county executive’s race by today’s deadline.

He said he “wasn’t going to be presenting any signatures to the Board of Elections today.”

“I’m not out of the game,” Spano said, adding that he is going to set his sights on bigger things. “I’m going to stay active, not radio active, just active.”

Word of Spano bailing out of the race comes a few weeks after he and Sam Zherka — owner of the Guardian newspaper and a New York City stripclub — went separate ways.

Zherka earlier this month said Spano had to step up his efforts to get the required 1,500 legitimate signatures, which typically translates into needing triple that number because many are thrown out.

“When you decide to run as an independent, you’ve got to carry the ball,” Zherka then said. “I think he expected me to come out heavier for him. … I told him: ‘David, you’re on your own.’ ”

  1. THE CONSULTANT

so first sam uses david to attempt to get publicity about
his efforts to abolish county government building
him up, with absolutely no regard for the personal side
of the father son relationship, and then he tells david
“you are on your own” fact is that sam zherka is the only
reason david spano had any platform to begin with…zherka
is totally responsible for david spano the challenger..
but when it came time to cough up some money sam backed
away…making the entire affair simply a sideshow..

One wonders, had he earnestly and doggedly played the game for thirty years with either Party if he would not today be County Executive, if not Governor. Seems that’s how the present bumbling seat-holders got there.

  3. THE CONSULTANT

actually this is the first year where a circus atmosphere
has dominated the county executive race..most years this
is a serious race with serious issues discussed..until
sam zherka attempted to inject himself into local politics as the tax hero that he is certainly not, thereby distracting from the real issue about growing governmental
intrusion, about taking money from CDBG block grants and
then owing your fealty to the federal government, etc
which has made it even harder for the real challenger
in this race, the republican to reach voters, since
all the noise is being made by bit players like sam zherka
and david spano..hopefully with davids’ final curtain
bow, we can get on with the legitimate portion of the race
    for executive

The circus atmosphere can only help the challenger, Rob Astorino. Voters are fed up with circus government. Just look at today’s Q Poll. Voters are primed to throw out bad incumbents, like Andy Spano.

This housing fiasco once again proves just how incompetent Spano is. It will be his undoing. He never should have run for a fourth term.

Maybe one day we’ll all see just how devious Politics on the Hudson really is. Zherka’s move is little different from all of the other less favorable moves made over the years in politics, maany much more wicked than using an already dysfuctional relationship as a means to an end.

  6. THE CONSULTANT

however zherka is not a political party or figure ..he is
just a guy with an axe to grind..someone who has initiated
lawsuits against municipalities over and over again costing
taxpayers millions while claiming to be concerned about
the cost of property taxes..zherka is someone who is
under criminal investigation in manhattan by his own admission for drug dealing and prostition, and who is
supporting and funding the campaign of tony castro for
    district attorney…..and to allow someone
like that to have that kind of input in how the grand
jury operates would be dangerous..very very dangerous

Sounds like Ray Tartaglione! (Mr. Floatie to those of the uninitiated)

  8. the consultant

looks like sammy boys is taking it on the chin…his man
rivers got tossed from the ballot in mount vernon..
david spano is not running against his dad..and tony
castro will get crushed in the primary…add that
to the robertson fiasco in the mayor’s race and its
fair to say that support from sam zherka is kind
of like support from a black widow…

Consultant- Very Well Said..!!! You described Zherka to a “T”.. It seems that whoever comes into contact with Zherka comes away with the short end of the stick. I also wish Zherka Victim, David Spano the Best Of Luck in his Future Endeavors….... Have a Grat Day..!!!

  10. smartporpoise

Still time to start getting those signatures for Governor, Dave.

  11. blueryder

well let me clear things up on this out dated blogg.
Sammy Zherka should and will be known as the man who could get things done.hes the only well to do guy in this County who has the big caring heart fortitude and vision.
to come out and help the little guy or underdog.

    so god bless Sammy Zherka

    kind regards Dave Spano
