Nassau County Democratic chairman Jay Jacobs was officially elected this afternoon as state Democratic chairman. He succeeds June O’Neill, who is stepping down to be chairwoman of the executive committee after being tapped for the post when Gov. Eliot Spitzer took office in January 2007.
Jacobs has been a strong supporter of Gov. David Paterson and his election bid.
“This is a great time to be a Democrat, not only in New York state, but across the nation,” Jacobs said in a statement. “I am excited and honored to serve as the party’s chairman, and look forward to building on the great foundation laid by June O’Neill and increasing our margins across the state.”
