Attorney General Andrew Cuomo rallied state Democrats this morning in Buffalo, telling a crowd of supporters that New Yorkers have lost trust in state government.
Gannett’s Buffalo affiliate WGRZ has the clips from Cuomo’s speech here.
Cuomo, who is believed to be eyeing a run for governor next year, hit on the need to restore the public’s confidence in government and seek to lower state spending without raising taxes. He called for a reorganization of government, saying the state has 10,000 local governments.
“It’s not going to be easy,” Cuomo said. “This is one of those gut check periods in life, if you will. We do have real problems. The economic slowdown has affected this state dramatically.”
Cuomo spoke to state Democrats this morning and has brushed off speculation that he will run for governor next year. He told reporters that he’s talked about government consolidation and the need to lower taxes throughout his term as attorney general.
Gov. David Paterson, who has insisted he plans to run for election next year despite historic low approval ratings, is planning to address the crowd later today. Cuomo and Paterson hugged and exchanged a brief greeting this morning in a hallway outside the Buffalo hotel ballroom.
