Astorino, Schorr get retired cops support

October
14

The Westchester County Police Retired Officers on Tuesday endorsed two Republicans running for county-wide office: Rob Astorino for Westchester county executive and Dan Schorr for district attorney.

The group, comprised of retired county police officers, cited high property taxes, wasteful government spending, rising crime, and lenient plea bargains to violent criminals as serious issues in this year’s races.

“Westchester is headed in the wrong direction, and if we don’t elect new leaders to reverse the questionable policies of the incumbent county executive and district attorney, we will continue to see our retirees, family, and friends suffer as a result,” said Steve Hoey, president of the Westchester County Police Retired Officers. “Rob Astorino will ensure that Westchester will no longer have the dubious distinction of having the highest property taxes in the nation. He will fight to streamline government and make Westchester affordable for the middle class again.”

The group said Schorr has the experience and understanding to prosecute cases and keep residents safe. He would put an end to easy plea bargains, Hoey said.

I am really tired of hearing the refrain “easy plea bargain”
it has absolutlely no meaning…the violent felony conviction rate in the westchester da’s office is among
the highest in the state..if plea bargains were “easy”
that would not be the case..does anyone understand what
a plea bargain is?...its not a bargain or a giveaway..
the criminal justice system charges someone with a felony
...that person can choose to go to trial on the felony
or take what the da’s office believes under the facts and
circumstances would be an appropriate disposition of the
case in terms of what the person pleads guilty to and
what the sentence paramaters are..now if dan schorr wants
to take every felony case to trial in westchester just
to prove he can convict of the top count every single
time..he will be doing what no other da in the country
does…and that is trying the case for the pr value alone
and he also will be putting so much pressure on the system
that trials will be lost, and defendants will walk on
motions to dismiss…for delay because the criminal justice
system cannot possibly try every case…thats why every
single da’s office in the country negotiates pleas with guilty defendants every day of the week..its another indication of why dan schorr is way to immature for
    the job

  2. BLUE

“EASY PLEA BARGAINS”? Another way to tell that Dan Schorr is simply not mature enough to be DA. The strain of having a trial for each and evey case shows just how inept Schorr would be as an administrator of a District Attorney’s office. The system would grind to a halt and criminals would be out on bail or locked up awaiting trial. Seems like mismanagement in the making.

  3. rj

Who are the “Westchester County Police Retired Officers”? Another police group with no real credentials who come out and endorse and claim to be representing certain people or groups. I looked them up on Goggle and found nothing about them, seems like they really do not exist. They have no website, no contact information and no other information about their organization. In the world of modern technology you would think there would be a few comments about their organization, but I cannot find anything.

This group is made up of a few retired county cops and other retired cops from different areas. They in no way represent the active cops who are still fighting the battle everyday, this group is lucky if it has 50 members. This endorsement is not worth the paper it is written on.

I have recently seen in the Gannett News and on News 12 that Janet DiFiore has great support from many different Police organizations.

  4. jeffrey

difiore is the only candidate for DA with any claim to
substantial police support of any kind…Schorr has one
organization more interested in the amount of grant money it
gets for its own use than anything else..and dumb enough to
say so in its press release..meanwhile difiore has the support of the umbrella group repesenting 53 or so local
pba’s..the guys who make the collars on a daily basis..
if schorr is claiming to be such a great manager..it would
be nice for him to explain just why he spent about 50% of
his funds on strategists, consultants and pollsters..who
talked him into that…and if he can be talked into wasting that kind of money entrusted to him by his supporters what
makes anyone think he could efficiently run a 20 million dollar da’s office budget..in fact what administrative
experience does schorr have…has he been a bureau chief
in a major da’s office….has he been a deputy bureu chief
if so ..how many da’s worked for him…and where…
was he on the executvie committee of the last two da’s
offices he served in..or was he simply one of hundreds of
ada’s in the metropolitan area…in other words what is
it that equips schorr to run one of the largest lawfirms
    in the nation

  5. rj

People are starting to find out the truth about Dan Schorr. Dan Schorr is a desperate person who will say and do anything to try and gather some press. Dan Schorr has discredited himself and he is discrediting the already beating down Republican Party.
As far as Dan Schorr’s history as an Assistant District Attorney, Schorr was a middle of the pack ADA who really never got any recognition. Schorr was never a shinning star or someone people would predict had a great future, he was always “Just present at work”.

The previous post brings up a great point, if Dan Schorr is paying big dollars for Republican Party consultants then he is showing his vulnerability, those consultants who serve Republican Party candidates are seeking one more payday from another opponent who has no chance. Why is Dan Schorr allowing himself to be sucked in by these hustlers who want nothing more then his money?

At the end of the day Dan Schorr will fall in line with the rest of those who were told they could win by the same consultants. Come November 3, 2009, Dan Schorr will be defeated and on Nov. 4th Dan Schorr will have his last day of publicity before he sails into the dusk and his name will only be remembered as a beaten down opponent.

    edelman loves typeing to himself

  7. Blue Men

Hey Edelman – if you are going to type under different names – at least don’t use the same format the distinguishes you (...) and put out the same old dribble. Everyone knows your posting a mile away – the different names don’t fool people. The bottom line is Janet supporters can’t stand that cops do not support her. Cops are the ones who are beating the “easy plea bargain” drum…they are the ones who put their life on the line every day arresting criminals only to find them back out on the street months later. It’s ridiculous and its going to end. Like it or not, Dan Schorr is a serious oppponent and Janet does not know how to handle it.

  8. rj

Plea bargaining is a necessity to adjudicate cases fairly for all. Cops often are the ones who promote a plea deal on certain cases. All cases are not 100% winners at trial and sometimes prosecutors or cops will see where their case may have a flaw and a plea deal serves the best for everyone. There are often circumstances that people not involved with the case often do not know or will not understand which causes cases to get plead out. Sometimes you may have a case where the defendant is guilty, the public knows he is guilty, the prosecutor know he is guilty and the defendant is willing to admit to a plea deal. Often in these cases there may be something in the case that only the insiders know could cause the case to be lost at trial. Look at OJ, we all know he was guilty, but he hired good attorneys and he beat the case. I would much rather see a criminal plea guilty to a deal and serve a reasonable amount of time for their crime then see them beat the case on a technicality.

Sorry to say, but Dan Schorr is neither a strong nor credible candidate.

  9. jeffrey

Hey blue..worry less about who is posting and more about
the substance of the post..cops are not supporting janet
you say…but yet 53pba’s and their umbrella groups
do…who is it on the active police force that is not
supporting difiore..? the westchester pba cops who
want their drug grant monies..give me a break..plea
negotiations are part of what a DA does…each case is
different with aggravating and mitigating circumstances
and cops generally go along with the pleas..in fact they
often recommend them since cops know their suspects backrounds..for you to imply that plea bargaining will
end is more dribble and frankly itsw the same garbage that
candidates have used since 1973..every challenger has
always criticized plea deals..but the public doesn’t care
about the criticism..it has never worked and is intellectually dishonest..big time…but the public will
care about a candidate for DA paying big money from his
campaign to strategists consultants and pollsters..if
schorr has a message to get out…where is it..so far
he has spent almost 100,000 on nothing…have you seen
a tv spot or a piece of mail..schorr got snookered by
the republican leader and wasn’t strong enough to
say know.the same way he wasn’t strong enough to tell
giulio cavalo to take a walk…and the same way he wasn’t
strong enough to condemn the castro attacks on the westchester cop that castro accused of executing officer
ridley….not a very solid showing for a first time candidate who wants a future in westchester

  10. Red

Hey Edelman – the 53 groups under the umbrella of the APA are NOT supporting Janet. Get over it already. Who is not endorsing Janet? Yonkers. Mt. Vernon. Ardsley. Bedford. Briarcliff Manor. Bronxville. Buchanan. Croton on Hudson. Dobbs Ferry. Eastchester. Elmsford. Harrison. Hastings on Hudson. Irvington. Larchmont. Lewisboro. Mt. Kisco. Mt. Pleasant. New Castle. New Rochelle. North Castle. North Salem. Pelham. Pelham Manor. Peekskill. Pleasantville. Port Chester. Pound Ridge. Rye Brook. Rye City. Scarsdale. Sleepy Hollow. Somers. Tarrytown. Tuckahoe. White Plains. County PBA. Not one of those individual PBAs has endorsed Janet. Not one.
And once again Edelman, since you continue to be a broken record, Dan HAS condemed the Guardian for its attacks on the Officer Ridley case. Can we please move on? He does not have the support of Cavallo. He does not have the support of Zherka.

  11. jeffrey

its too late…dan should have stepped up to the plate
when he had the chance..now that zherka and cavalo have
been totally marginalized saying that he doesn’t have their support is not good enough.the time to make the choices
was months ago when they were still offering him the IND line if castro lost the primary..and you know exactly what
I am referencing…and that has been dan’s biggest failure
he got involved with the wrong crowd in seeking to be the
nominee of the party..not all his fault..but he stood warned
and failed to heed it…westchester politics is not what
it used to be…there never used to be good guys and bad
guys..just different parties…those times have changed
and candidates for chief law enforement officer have to
do and say the right thing at the right time regardless
of whose support they think they might have a chance to get
as for the endorsements..its all irrelevant and frankly not worth discussing…dan gets no more than 32% of the total
    vote in two weeks…

  12. nonaubiz

All this is wasted time and space.

Dan Schorr has no chance. He is too immature and has virtually no experience for the job he seeks.

    His ideas are hare-brained.

Just one small example is the one about having one huge building for all victims of domestic violence in the county. This is wacky. There are victims across the county and OUTREACH is the name of the game. Schorr thinks the victims from across the county are going to get a bus, a train or a cab to White Plains? (perhaps he can flap his ears and fly but others can’t) He’s an idiot.

Moreover he’s dangerous because his ideas are, in addition to being stupid, going to get people hurt.

As to his associations, there is no question that he had an opportunity to speak about the strip club crowd, and he did, in favor of them. For this he lost his soul.

For a candidate for District Attorney the question about these people should result in the candidate vomiting a little in their mouth. That crowd is beyond vulgar and well deep into evil.

He has no chance at all, none. Thank God.

  13. Got a clue

    Hey nonaubiz,

Why don’t you knock Congresswoman Lowey who just secured upwards of millions in federal funds to pay for the Domestic Violence Victim’s Center? Clearly, she doesn’t think it’s such a harebrained idea.

Your entire post is completely irrevelant and without merit. Schorr never spoke in favor of the strip club crowd so unless you have something truthful and relevant to say, might as well just not say anything.

  14. Kevin

Mr. Schorr has been heard several times by different people talking about the respect he has for Mr. Cavallo and the Independence Party. When Mr. Schorr thought he was going to get the Independence Party endorsement if Mr. Castro lost the primary Mr. Schorr was clearly kissing up to Mr. Zherka and Mr. Cavallo. This world of politics in Westchester County is very small and there are no secrets. Mr. Schorr has shown us all that his principles and character are truly in question.

  15. jeffrey

kevin is exactly correct..dan is not a man of principal
either that or is extremely naive about westchester..the deal was made early on for castro to get the IND line
but Dan was given to understand that if that did not work
out he would be the recipient of the line..so dan played
along to get along..not what we need in a DA..he knew
that zherka supported castro and was working with cavalo
and he knew that should castro not win he would get the line
as it turns out castro could not get off the line but that
does not lessen dan’s knowleege…those who know the game on
the inside know that dan tried to game the system..on
the advice of the republican leader..of course he had
to pay the financial price and all you have to do is
to read his filing to see what that was…ed cox
by the way is aware of all of this and is not happy

  16. ginooze

first off, one of the schorr folks wrote, “The bottom line is Janet supporters can’t stand that cops do not support her.”

so.. what is this? schorr finally gets a single real law enforcement organization to support him and all of a sudden he has all the support and janet has none? give me a break!

janet is overwhelmingly supported by the men and women of law enforcement. that’s a fact.

  17. nonaubiz

First off I would like you to show me the appropriations on Congresswoman Lowey’s website. She posts everything she can about new funds and there is nothing there about the Women’s Center (see the link below for her February postings)

    *****************************************************
(I posted this a second time without the link to Congresswoman Lowey’s website because it takes days for the moderator to pass on web links so go look on her site yourself it’s not hard to find).

    ****************************************************

Second while I have no particular issues with Ms Lowey even if she did get funding it doesn’t make it a good idea.

It’s an idea designed to build a big fat building filled with employees and it’s about stuffing it with grateful voters not grateful women in need because women in need are scattered across the county and they need help locally where the local police and the local town officials can help the most. So it’s just an idiotic and harebrained idea suggested by an inexperienced and immature kid.

Third we all know that Dan Schorr said on WVOX Radio that that he would accept the endorsement of Strip Club Sam who he knows in under investigation for drug dealing, prostitution and money laundering. So you are simply incorrect on all counts but thanks for playing.

  18. Got a clue

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) today announced the Westchester County Office for Women (WCoFW) will receive a $1 million federal grant to establish a Family Justice Center at the White Plains Court Complex.
“The Westchester County OFW (WcoFW)has a proven track record of providing critical assistance to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking,” said Lowey. “I am thrilled this grant will enable OFW to continue and expand its important work.”
Lowey assisted the Westchester County OFW’s grant application to the U.S. Department of Justice by sending a letter of support in March 2009.

  19. Red

If Ed Cox was “not happy” why in the world is he supporting Dan then? Janet supporters can continue to beat the Sam Zherka drum, but Dan has never publicly or privately said he would accept support from Sam Zherka. Case closed. Find something else to harp on, because this issue is getting really tiring.

  20. jeffrey

You are dead wrong red..dan said he would accept support from sam zherka on wvox…he may have since changed his
opinion..but that’s like closing the barn door after the
horse escapes…dan’s first instinct was to accept support
because he didn’t want to “offend” sam zherka..I have the
tape of the show if you want it…and I’m sure if you
ask dan he won’t deny it…go ahead…point is that
his first response was the measure of his ability to
do the right thing..and he failed the test

  21. rj

    Here is my prediction:

    Janet Difiore 65%
    Dan Schorr 28%
    Tony Castro 7%

  22. Quentin

Nov 4, 2009 headlines will read.

“DiFiore trounces opponents, Spano wins and Democrats countywide win big”

The Republicans may have a good year next year with the Congressional races, but this year the Democrats will prevail locally.

  23. the consultant

to rj …much as I would like to think that voters are
able to make the distinctions lets remember what is at
play here…castro has two lines.. WFP and IND…he
should be able to pull 3% and 7%..only because many
voters are uninformed and don’t really know what the
hell they are doing..so for example if they are
non party registered they think they are INDEPENDENT
and some will gravitate to the INDEPENDENCE line just
for that reason alone..then there is the RTL candidate
who given that dan schor is pro choice may garner 2%
just because he exists on a ballot line..so far that
12%...Dan Schorr is still on a major party line,
and republicans vote for republicans in many cases
as many will be voting for astorino..so figure 34%
    base…that leaves 54% left for janet…a whopping
20% more than schorr..but for her to get in the 60% range
would require marginal voters to have a real understanding
of the stakes involved..having said that 58% would
    be a tidal wave landslide

  24. nonaubiz

Back to the two topics at hand, on the one huge building in White Plains I think it’s a big fat money waster and the one million is just a small drop in this huge bucket of wasted money.Westchester has been a leader across the country for providing great prosecutions in sex crimes and that started with Jeanine Pirro despite the objections of the employee of Strip Club Sam, Richard Blassberg. Who seems to think he understands the law despite the fact that he was never able to pass the bar exam.

So you have your opinion, I have mine, multiple smaller locations will serve the community better. I agree with the notion of this being under an umbrella but having the victims all come to one building is a mistake and nothing but another huge bureaucracy and we all know how that ends up.

As for Dan Schorr all that matters is this. He is not going to win. So there is no need to discuss him.

  25. rj

Mr. Consultant, I respect your opinion and your knowledge, however, I believe the voters in Westchester will go outside of the norm and cross lines and vote for Janet DiFiore.

Janet DiFiore has done a fantastic job as District Attorney and voters of all party affiliation will flock to her on election day.

Andy Spano will also win by a nice margin with the Democratic and Conservative Lines.

  26. ed1

And, presumably, you’ll keep your job and all will be slam- dancing except, of course, for the overburdened taxpayer, about whom none of you have any interest.

  27. the consultant

either way difiore is a big winner..her getting in excess
of 60 per cent is not the important fact..it is the
fact that she will outpoll her closest competition by
twenty per cent regardless of the number of lines..
and as for the taxpayer…its time to cut spending
drasticallly..the governor appears to want to do it
but the democratic state senate does not
