About That Special Session

October
20

Gov. David Paterson said on WXXI in Rochester today that he has moved back the special session from Oct. 27 to Oct. 28 because “some of the legislators have some events in different parts of the state on the night of the 27th.”

That would be the fundraiser that the Senate Republican Campaign Committee is planning to hold that night in Manhattan.

Also, Senate Democrats planned to hold a budget hearing on Oct. 27. But Paterson rejected that the hearing was the reason for the schedule shift, saying Democrats would have to have cancelled the hearing if he stuck with Oct. 27.

“It was really just a one-day ask on the part of one of the conferences, and we accommodated them,” he said. “We’re not trying to make their lives miserable. We’re just trying to promote responsible behavior in the earliest period of time.”

He went on to say that lawmakers need to cut the $3 billion deficit and that raising taxes is not an option—at least this year.

“Taxes aren’t coming in,” Paterson said. “People are moving out of state, people aren’t working. People are shifting their primary residency to other states to avoid the high taxes New York has imposed. You can’t just keep taxing your way out of deficit.”
