Yonkers Board of Education cites “political forces” in new lawsuit
The Yonkers Board of Education has filed a lawsuit in the state Supreme Court asking a court justice to stop Yonkers inspector general Philip Zisman’s “attempt to illegally assert jurisdiction over an independent entity.”
The Board of Education filed its suit on Sept. 29 in White Plains and it is the latest development in an on-going dispute over whether the school district is a separate entity from the city, as the board argues.
Zisman has argued that the district is a dependent entity of the city whose employee compensation and benefits records he is entitled to probe.
The suit alleges that “political forces in the City Council of Yonkers have entered the battle on the side of the inspector general.”
Some council members have supported Zisman’s inquiry into the district’s employee benefits.
“The inspector general is engaged in a fishing expedition and is deliberately disrupting the operation of the board, the authority of its officials and the superintendent and subverting morale at the institution,” the court filings stated.
