They both support a state spending cap, and now Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County, and Gov. David Paterson have another issue in common: They are both concerned about the impact federal health-care reform would have on the state’s Medicaid costs.
Last week, Paterson and his office expressed concerns that a national health-care bill would mean higher Medicaid costs for New York, which already takes up 32 percent of the state’s current $132 billion budget.
Skelos warned the state’s congressional delegation—26 of the 28 House members are Democrats—to vote against any federal health-care reforms that would mandate more Medicaid costs on New York.
Today, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said a public option will be part of the reforms, but states can opt out of it.
Here’s Skelos’ letter to Sen. Charles Schumer today.
