(Nick) Spano backs (Andy) Spano

October
30

tjndc5-5cerar1ex5uictf04p4_layoutFormer Republican State Sen. Nick Spano announced that he’s throwing his support behind County Executive Andrew Spano, a Democrat.

In a letter, the Republican power broker turned lobbyist said Andy Spano is an “innovative leader who can guide us through these tough fiscal times.” He said the county executive has managed the government well with new technology and ideas.

“It’s the first time I’m making an endorsement of a Democrat with the exception of my brother,” Nick Spano told Politics on the Hudson today. His brother is Assemblyman Mike Spano, a Democrat from Yonkers who was once a Republican. Nick Spano said he felt strongly about the county executive’s “style of leadership.”

He also said he had real concerns with an element of the GOP that represents right wing politics to the extreme.

“Make no mistake, with that extremist power will come intolerance,” Nick Spano wrote in an letter that is going to select voters throughout the county. “Intolerance of people who live different lifestyles and intolerance to a woman’s right to choose. That’s an intolerance that I will not tolerate.”

Nick Spano makes no mention of Rob Astorino in his letter, though in a subsequent conversation, he said he was talking about some of his supporters. Although he said he wasn’t referring to the Conservative Party, which backed Andy Spano with a share of controversy and lawsuits, rather leaders like State Party Chairman Mike Long. (Earlier this week, Long came out to support Astorino.)

“I’m talking about a lot of people who are supporting him and who represent the extremists and intolerance. I think it’s a problem,” he said. “I don’t think a county run by Rob Astorino is a county I would like.”

I am a registered republican and I value the opinion of my former Seantor Nick Spano. I I will crossing over and voting for Andy Spano.

  2. smartporpoise

People have long ago wised-up to this duplicitous windbag who has abandoned his party and parlayed his Albany connections into just another prosperous pay-to-play lobbying gig. If the Chimps took over from Planet of the Apes, he’d no doubt switch allegiances again and would be delivering the bananas.

  3. Laracroft22

This is absolutely absurd. Nick Spano should switch his party like his brother Mike did. They should all become Democrats since they are so liberal anyway. It would be great for the Republican Party to get rid of Nick. The people only care about how much money thy can stuff in their pockets. They really don’t care about the residents of Westchester county.

  4. TomJo

I am thoroughly nauseated by the “follow the money” Nicky Spano,

He was through with how much he could get from the Repubs, the rat getting off before the ship sank, just like his brother, and is looking to get as much money as he can. His ‘girlfriend’ Burns did the same with a hijacking of the Westchester Conservative Party.

I cannot fathom how these people can look themselves in the mirror every morning, unless they are totally delusional.

And the work that was done on their behalfs in the past by schmucks like us who were naive to believe their lies have hopefully woken up.

Get Spano out of there ASAP. Get Burns out of there.
Hopefully Nicky will start to lose some power then.
And hopefully Astorino not become too jaded too quickly.

And hopefully NY will wise up and institute some term limits to break up incumbent monopolies and gratutious freeloaders.

Nick Spano clarified this race in my mind. He said what I have been thinking. Andy Spano has this republican’s vote.

ps. Nick Spano – please come back. We miss you. We need people to work on solutions. Not just identifying problems.

  6. The New Barney Frank

Looks like Nick has been handed down Jerrold Nadler’s old fat suits. He not only looks like porker Nadler, he also now votes like him. As Tomjo said, Nicky has taken us all to the cleaners for years and years. Before he takes his new suit in for dry cleaning, he should first get a few estimates. We all like fat capitalists who prefer socialism (for everyone else.)

  7. Dave

Who cares that Nick Spano wears XL suits and Astorino buys his suits in the children’s dept at Sears? Sen. Spano has a track record of helping his community. Astorino has a track record of continually running for office and losing. Rob has no resume.

  8. Rob

Firing Nick Spano’s sister seemed like a good idea at the time.

  9. ed1

Next is Gail Burns. Or will Amicone become a Democrat also? They’ll all eventually end up, one way or another, working on our dime for Andy Spano if they can get him back in. If Astorino wins, they’ll all be scrambling for cover and maybe some modicum of sanity will slowly evolve.

  10. Puke

Its all about his squeeze Burns. Amazing

  11. ed1

Amicone finally manned-up and tossed Burns. She was only making 95. For manipulating for him the conservative endorsement, Andy can surely find her a hundred and a fifty with an SUV. And the beat goes on.

  12. Westchester DPW

In the News12 debate, Astorino said that if he wins the election, Westchester County employees will pay for their own healthcare. Who was he trying to impress? He lost a few thousand votes from those employees. Astrorino’s inexperience is blatant. Apparently, he’s never dealt with a union before.

  13. No More Spanos

Spano and all of his ilk should be banned from any further involvement with the Republican Party.
Where is the updated chart outlining the Spano family tree all feeding from the public tit.

  14. Johnson

The people that know the Spano’s will tell you that they are fair & honest folks. Many Spano’s may be employed by govt agencies, but each one does their job well. Cops, firemen, probabtion officers, elected officials, etc…

If you want to talk about somebody that takes advantage, look no further than Republican Chairman Doug Colety. He fired Steve Levy to collect his paycheck. Every piece of republican mail & every yard sign are printed by Colety’s shop in New Rochelle. Somebody should calculate the totals from campaign financial disclosures. I recall Colety agreeing to not take advantage of his chairmanship. Greed is a sin.

  15. Titanic

Astorino’s campaign is sinking fast. He’s been exposed as a smug extremist, a racist and a liar. He is fortunate that the election is Tuesday. His ship is taking on water.

  16. smartporpoise

Anyone notice that Titanic, Ellen, Dave, Johnson, Tom, TP, Rob, Sherry, etc. all harp on the exact same thing and all mis-spell the same words and share the same clumsy prose? An army of one. It is to laugh.

  17. Titanic

I wonder if we went to school together…

  18. jeffrey

doug colety is the problem not the solution…doug colety’s
brilliant strategic plan was to support castro’s efforts
to run a primary against difiore and to give castro the IND line ..he attended an early fundraiser for castro given by
cavalo even while he had his own candidate dan schorr..colety zhreka and cavalo thought they could drain
democratic votes from difiore by running castro…as an IND
after the primary…and then schorr would squeak in…how
dumb can you be…what they did was to make so much noise
in the primary that astorino who had a real chance to unseat
andy spano got no traction and was completely drowned out
by the da primary…until afte sept 15th…giving him
not a lot of time to establish his name recognition and to
drive up andy spano’s negatives.. the recent sienna poll
indicated spano had 60% negatives with ind voters and
46% with all voters..had colety not alligned himself
with the zherka cavalo faction and had stopped angsting
about difiore being a democrat he could have devoted his
time money and resources to making sure astorino won the
election whcih as it turned out this year was very doable
colety, however made his deals and planned his strategy
around difiore not around the county executive race…
we should all be watching tuesday night to see how it
all turns out..we know that difiore will be a big winner
the issue left to determine is whether what colety did
hurt his own canddidate for county executive..as as for
the printing issue..colety promised he would not make
money from candidats he chose to run for office…after this
election the attorney general will be asked to conduct
an investigation into whether or not a party chairman
recieved a benefit from the candidates he selected…
the attorney general’s office will be asked to render
an opinion on the ethics of getting any monetary benefit
as party leader…this issue is not going away

  19. smartporpoise

Should be, “I wonder if I went to school together.” Your “Mini-Me” comment, though, hit the spot.

  20. ed1

Colety is a nice guy, but in way, way over his head even in the shallow waters of County politics as he flops around trying to swim with the sand sharks.

  21. Johnson

I believe that Colety is indeed overwhelmed with the political wrangling. Frankly, I think he is far too green for the role as chairman. Guys like Cavallo & Zherka led him down the alley. The carrot was probably the promise of printing contracts.
I will be shocked if the AG investigates Colety’s profit making.

  22. Fighting Fritz

Friends…let talk about the future. Hard core Republicans will retreat into their redoubts in Eastchester, Harrison, Mt. Pleasant and parts of Northern Westchester. They’ll have that, and a couple of Council districts in Yonkers and New Rochelle. Other Republicans will hightail it out to more Republican areas. Otherwise Democrats own this county stem to stern. Like it? Hate it? Deal with it!

And many Republicans will become DEMOCRATS. (Mike Spano, Nick Spano and Janet DiFiore are the trendsetters) They will run in judicial primaries…they will run in other primaries, banking on the very loose control organization Dems have over their primary electorate. The Tea Party crowd owns less than 30% of the Westchester electorate.

Whenever a Dem gets caught red-handed in a bad situation, they’ll just replace him or her with a non-tainted Dem (see Hevesi, Spitzer) and maintain their baseline control. And why shouldn’t they? The NY Republicans are suffering from the National (i.e. Southern evangelical) Republicans insistance on anti-abortion absolutism, arch-conservative angry rhetoric. Plays big-time in Wasilla, but decimates the once-Republican bastions in Westchester.

  23. Big Lou

I for one will be casting my votes in line with what my senator has said. Spano – difiore – degeorgio and lesnick..

Bad move by firing Levy and Gail as well as the Senators sister.

  24. ed1

Had Othello fired Iago early on, his plight and fate may have turned out more pleasantly.

  25. westchester

Nick Spano wrecked the Republican party when he was chairman. No money was raised, no candidates were recruited, and now this once proud, well managed county has become a one party state. Nick Spano was about Nick Spano and when the Republican Party was used up, he tossed it aside. Do you like being the highest taxed county in the country? Do you like the bloated, unresponsive government? do you like Playland bleeding money? If so, the Spanos are your guys.

This guy is probably the former Legislator, and former assemblyman from Yonkers that Nick tried to put on the parole board, but did not have enough college and so put him instead on the liquor authority.Just so Mike Spano could run for assembly. Big bucks made on liquor authority for one meeting a month. So just what would you expect from him. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you

  27. RODNEY

ROB ASTORINO WINS YES YES YES

  28. ed1

Looks like left wing Jersey and left wing Westchester will wake up and swallow a strong dose of disbelief along with their (organic) orange juice. Next, Albany!

  29. jane

Astorino WIns, Very bad news for Nick Spano. Very Bad.

  30. smartporpoise

Let’s hope the Republicans learned a lesson and jettison Nick Spano and his ilk forthwith in every way, shape, or form.

  31. steph

What a great day. Finally Westchester has said no to high taxes, excessive spending, big government and the arrogance that is Andy Spano and his fellow tax and spend democrats.

I mean this guy Andy Spano talks about quality of life and compassion. What about quality of life and compassion for those folks that get up and work everyday only to see most of their money ripped from them by tax after tax after tax.

Nick we will not forget you for being a turncoat to your party and supporting someone who clearly does not have the interest of working families in this county. I don’t know what 12 pieces of silver Andy Spano promised you but I am happy you don’t get to collect. The good people of Westchester have spoken.

Nick, we will remember your dirty tricks in 2010 when those like you are up for reelection.

  32. VJ Machiavelli

Nick please pack your bags and join the others in SIBERIA, you sold out and lost time to LEAVE.
