Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, a potential Democratic gubernatorial candidate next year, was not in attendance today at Gov. David Paterson’s speech to a joint session of the Legislature.

A spokesman said Cuomo had a “long-term scheduling conflict.”

Paterson, who is running for a full four-year term next year, said Cuomo was invited along with other statewide leaders.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch and the legislative leaders were seated behind the Democratic governor. Also not present was Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman. whom Paterson appointed to the position.

During the annual State of the State address, the chief judge and the statewide elected officials are seated behind the governor.

“We invited the attorney general and the attorney general thanked us for the invitation and said that he had another matter that he had to address,” Paterson explained afterward.
