Kruger To Paterson: Collect Sales Taxes On Indian Reservations
Sen. Carl Kruger, D-Brooklyn, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, wrote a letter to Gov. David Paterson asking him to start taxing cigarettes sold on Native American reservations. Kruger claims the tax could generate up to $1.6 billion in revenue for the state, reports Gannett’s Jon Campbell, who attended Kruger’s news conference outside the governor’s office.
Kruger hand-delivered a letter to Paterson saying he should collect the taxes.
“We have an obligation as elected officials and as law-abiding New Yorkers to say that everybody has to pay their fair share. The denial of these taxes is no different than saying to somebody in Westchester County, ‘Don’t pay your property tax, and if you’re upset by that, then go out and picket on the Sprain Brook (Parkway).’”
Matt Anderson, spokesman for Paterson’s budget division, said his office estimated taxing the cigarettes would bring in a more modest $200 million to $300 million annually.
The “$1.6 billion is certainly on the high side,” said Matt Anderson, spokesman for Paterson’s budget division. “We don’t think it’s ultimately achievable.”

There are hypocritical ivory-tower Learjet Liberals in every state. But only in New York are they so blatant and unapologetic for their hypocrisy.
One would assume a dyed-in-the-wool Liberal with an ethnically-diverse constituency would have strong moral objections to demanding a military occupation of the sovereign land of THE most oppressed, abused, raped and imprisoned minority group in American history.
But, as you see, the downstate Liberals care about precisely one place: New York City. They will never care about anyone or anything else. Their concern for the suffering and oppressed ends when it costs them money (taxes in this case) or doesn’t give them any votes.
Do you upstaters realize how much contempt and sneering disdain the downstaters have for you? You are seen as a stupid, backwards redneck bumpkin, suitable only for paying tribute to your betters in the form of amongst the highest taxes in the country, and being told what to do by your educated metropolitan masters.
And it has been the same way in NYC for decades. I have no hope for Gotham City; Ras al-Ghul from Batman Begins was right. “Gotham’s time has come. The city has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice. It is beyond saving and must be cut off and allowed to die.”
But since that doesn’t seem forthcoming or likely, I reserve my hope that one day the soccer-mom upstaters will wake up and see that the deed to the Patroonship of Upstate NY is held by Manhattan plutocrats who view them as sub-human compared to the great and enlightened NYCers.
