Suozzi Concedes County Executive Race

Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, who ran for governor in 2006 and was seen by Democrats as a viable statewide candidate again next year, conceded today in his re-election as county executive.

It is a remarkable setback for Suozzi, who gained statewide attention for his “Fix Albany” campaign in 2004 that he was able to parlay into a run for governor in 2006, ultimately losing to Eliot Spitzer in the Democratic primary.

Suozzi trailed Republican challenger Edward Mangano by 377 votes when the paper-ballot count was finished yesterday.

Suozzi has been eying another statewide run, most likely for attorney general if Attorney General Andrew Cuomo runs for governor next year.

But the loss, Democratic officials have said, likely ends any chance of him seeking statewide office next year.
