Mount Vernon mayor calls for quick city budget adoption

Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young issued a press statement today after the City Council president William Randolph asked for an adjournment to give the City Council more time to review the proposed document.

Here is what Young wrote:

REMAINING STEADFAST ON STREAMLINING CITY GOVERNMENT
Mayor will not consider anything over 3.96% increase

Mount Vernon, NY— “This morning, the Board of Estimate & Contract met to approve a Proposed Budget for 2010 and send it to the City Council for a second public hearing, deletions, and final approval.  However, this action was not carried out because the Comptroller and City Council President have delayed their review, and in my view, are now obstructing the process from moving forward.

Last Thursday at the public hearing held by the Board of Estimate & Contract I listened to suggestions from over 50 residents, with about 200 more people attending. My initial proposal called for a 3.93% increase, which included the elimination of 25 positions in the city, but without any reductions in uniformed police and fire personnel.  Many of you indicated your concern with the effect this would have on city service.  I heard that message loud and clear. Therefore, the revised proposed budget that I have submitted represents a 3.96% increase, but we have been able to reduce the amount of positions eliminated to 15, again with no reduction to uniformed police or fire personnel.

I want you, the citizens of Mount Vernon, to know that I have fought and will continue to fight for a streamlined government and a reduced tax burden.  Any additions to this budget that will adversely affect the current proposed rate will not be made because I have pushed for them.  I am standing firm.  I will continue to update you on this ongoing process.”

A .O3% addition, from 3.93 to 3.96 saves 10 jobs? Me thinks they could use a bit of input from Pythagoras, Zeno of Elea, and Archimedes.

The hot rumor on the street is that City Council President and Board of Estimate swing vote Bill Randolph has cut a deal with his former nemesis Maureen Walker and her incoming city council lackeys where in exchange for pushing this budget vote into the new year, Randolph will be rewarded by being appointed City Clerk by the incoming city council swine.

Perfect timing for Spineless Bill who is getting tossed out with the ANdy Spano bathwater at the county. A new $90k+ per year job in MV will make it all better for Billy the Squid. Gotta love MV politics.
