Political speculation in the 19th C.D.
For those interested in behind-the-scenes machinations when it comes to the 19th Congressional District – you know, the seat held by Rep. John Hall, D-Dover Plains; the one once eyed by state Assemblyman Greg Ball, R-Patterson; and the one being sought by Republican Dr. Nan Hayworth, a well-funded, retired ophthalmologist – there’s talk of “a local GOP revolt” against Hayworth’s candidacy.
And then there’s this piece from Congressional Quarterly, where Republicans are talking up her candidacy.

As evidenced during the Bruno trial, NYS has some of the laxest ethics rules in the nation. Even federal prosecutors were left guessing who Bruno worked for, how much he may have been paid and what state funds he had a hand in directing to his employers and their friends. Not so at the federal level as Greg Ball, who seems ignorant of the myriad regulations he regularly is accused of violating, may have discovered. While he can claim – without fear of challenge – to be a “full time” Assembly member here in NY the feds will require proof (as well as full disclosure of all sources of income, political contributions and political action committees he may control or with which he is associated) – all that before the press starts sniffing around. In the final analysis, it is equally probable that Ball prefers not to be subject to that degree of scrutiny as it is that he has set aside his considerable political aspirations to serve the 40th State Senate District.
