Amicone Eyes State Senate Run
Yonkers Mayor Philip Amicone, a Republican, said he’s considering a run this fall for the state Senate against Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers.
After attending the State of the State address in Albany yesterday, Amicone said “I’m leaving my options open. I haven’t said yes or no to anything right now.”
But Amicone said he’s concerned that if Republicans don’t win back control of the state Senate this fall, they’ll have no chance of regaining power in the future, when in 2012 Democrats, if they remain in power, would set new district lines that would favor them.
“It’s clearly very important for balancing the state. And it’s very important, in my opinion, Republicans have to take back the Senate,” said Amicone, who is serving in his second term as mayor of the state’s fourth largest city.
“If they don’t, it’s going to be devastating for the two party-system, it’s going to be devastating to the state and in a year of redistricting, it could make it almost impossible for Republicans to get elected.”
Also, he added, “We need people who understand what the real burden is on cities. It all dictates from the state.”
He didn’t say there was anything particular about Stewart-Cousins he takes issue with, but it’s that “I think frankly the state’s broken. It’s not about anyone in particular.”
Stewart-Cousins first won election in 2006 in a narrow victory over Republican incumbent Nick Spano in a district that now has more than twice as many Democrats as Republicans.
But with gains in Westchester County in last year’s election with the election of GOP county executive Robert Astorino, Republicans feel renewed hope in Weschester and have been talking to Amicone for months.
He did not put a timetable on a decision.

Is this a joke?
phil is a mayor who knows first hand about the problems
big city mayors face…and he is correct a one party
system in albany is undemocratic and doesn’t serve the
interestests of most voters…given his high name id
and high favorables, he would make a very strong candidate
against stewart cousins…and given low democratic turnout
in greenburgh this year, it might be exactly the formula
for returnig republican control of at least on house
in albany
Please Phil… collect your bloated pension and go away. I beg you!

Why aren’t they running Amicone against Gillebrand?
New York State can not afford the racism and neglect that the Amicone administration rams down the throat of the citizens of Yonkers. Registered Independents and progressive Republicans should support Senator Stewart-Cousins – now and in November. We can do better than Mr. Amicone, for both our city and our State. Let’s get to work.
