With Endorsements, Harry Wilson Makes Comptroller Run Official

Harry Wilson, a former hedge-fund manager from Scarsdale, Westchester County, is officially running for state comptroller and wrote a letter today to Republican and Conservative party chairmen announcing his intentions, his spokesman Bill O’Reilly confirmed today.

Wilson picked up his first major endorsements today, getting the backing of the Westchester, Rockland, and Fulton County GOP chairmen. Later today, the chairmen from the Capital region — Albany, Saratoga and Montgomery counties — will endorse Wilson and U.S. Senate candidate Bruce Blakeman.

Wilson and Blakeman, along with state GOP chairman Ed Cox, are scheduled to speak tonight at the Town of Colonie’s Republican Committee reception tonight.

Wilson is the only Republican candidate so far to announce intentions to run against Democratic Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. He grew up in Johnstown, Fulton County.

“Fulton County Republicans are enormously proud to endorse our native son, Harry Wilson, for New York State Comptroller,” said Fulton County Republican chairwoman Susan McNeil.

“Like so many other counties in New York, Fulton County feels forgotten and betrayed by New York State government. Years of excessive spending and overly burdensome taxation from Albany have devastated our job base. We are confident that Harry has the energy, determination, and skill set to help get this state back on track.”

Wilson’s letter is below.

I am writing to make it official: I am running for New York State Comptroller. I want you to be among the first to know.

I have formed a committee – Taxpayers for Wilson – and I am actively raising money. I also have built out a high-quality campaign team that is running full steam ahead. We will not stop until Election Day.

This is a very winnable race, and with your backing, we are going to win it.

New York State needs fiscal experts at the helm of government. Our current budget predicament makes that clear. And the special election wins in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties last week prove that voters across the state are all ready to support fiscal conservatives in 2010.

New York State does not have to fall into further decline. The right formula is straightforward, even as it requires tough choices: our government needs to begin living within its means again. It needs to stop out-of-control spending that drives the highest state and local tax burden in the country and dissuades businesses and jobs from locating in our state.

That is the message I am running on, and the philosophy I will honor as the next New York State Comptroller.

I’ll continue to keep you regularly apprised of my campaign’s progress. I can only do this with your support and guidance, and I look forward to speaking with each of you at length in the weeks and months ahead. If you have any questions or ideas to share with me, I am available at your convenience at [email address]or by telephone at [phone number].

Best wishes,
Harry J. Wilson
