Sunday print exclusive: New York’s staggering property taxes

Posted by: Ed Forbes - Posted in property taxes, Uncategorized on Apr 15, 2010

Property taxes in Westchester County are the highest in the nation. Statewide, New Yorkers’ property tax bills are 79 percent above the national average. With the state on the verge of insolvency, the factors that drive taxes up — health care costs and high public-sector pensions and salaries — show no signs of slowing. What’s a homeowner to do? Some want to leave and go where taxes are lower. Others want to cap property taxes or spending. Many urge voting down school budgets. Joseph Spector of our Albany Bureau and Diana Costello spotlight the issues, the ideas, the fury and the frustration with New York’s crushing tax burden in an eye-opening front page report available exclusively in Sunday’s print editions of The Journal News.

Nice scam they have going. While I wasn’t looking, they somehow got my $500,000 home up to an assumed value of $890,000 over the past years. I finally got a certiorari bringing it down to $670,000, still almost 200 grand more than the house is worth. Then, they raise taxes on the new number. And then comes the school tax hikes. It’s a never ending pit.
