Pension reform from Kaplowitiz
Westchester County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz, D-Somers, who is running for state Senate, today proposed eliminating the use of overtime for calculating a public employee’s pension and also called for creating a pension plan for new public employees that would be similar to a 401K plan. Both measures, he said, could save taxpayers an estimated $2.2 billion over the next three years.
By 2013, Kaplowitz said, public employee pensions will cost taxpayers $6.8 billion, up from $2.4 billion in 2009.
“The costs of public pensions are killing New York State taxpayers,” he said.
Kaplowitz, a financial planner, said his proposal would not affect current employees and retirees — except for eliminating overtime when calculating pension benefits.
He unveiled his plan outside the Putnam County office building before heading to Albany to again detail his pension reforms.
Also running for the 40th state Senate District are Assemblyman Greg Ball and Somers Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy. Several supporters of Ball attended Kaplowitz’s Putnam press conference and stood at the gathering’s rear, as you can see in the photo below.

both mary beth and greg ball should have unveiled their
own plans to do this a long time ago…they are getting
bad advice and its starting to show
Kaplowitz or Murphy would be 10 time better then Ball. Ball is a loose canon and is capable of exploding at any moment.
Didn’t the current govenor propose something like this a few months ago as part of the state budget? I know the new Retirement Tier 5 does not permit OT to be considered any longer. So that has been taken care of for new members…but to take away from older members, should be interesting.
Yes, agreeing that Murphy or Kaplowitz would be much better than the other candidate.
The new Tier V limits the amount of OT that can be used for pensions to 15% per year.
Why didn’t Mike propose such measures in last 12 Years he served in Westchester Legislature? Or at least propose it now so when he goes back to the County Legislature in November he can continue the fight.
KAPLOWITIZ!!!!! Funny that the headline is Kaplowitiz. A new disease imposed on voters when the candidate claims he or she stands for fiscal responsibility but their voting record doesn’t support it.
I was at the Carmel press conference and the real story was the number of people who were there that don’t support Kaplowitz and that he refused to take questions from anyone other than the press.
I live in Chappaqua and Mike Kaplowitz has been ignoring me when I’ve asked what I originally thought was a simple question about his activities relating to the Westchester Housing Settlement vote. (I asked whether he ever had a meeting with the community before he voted yes for the settlement. He initially wrote back yes, but when I asked for dates, he said he can’t remember. So I went to the Town Clerk office and the only record I found is him speaking a full month AFTER his vote.)
I showed up at the conference yesterday hoping to get his clarification on this but he refused to take any questions from anyone other than the press. His initial reason for not taking my question: I don’t live in the district where he is running!
I was at the press conference and I am not a Ball supporter. My objection to Kaplowitz is that he is another one of those permanent politicians that voted for big spending and taxes for the past decade. Now that fiscal responsibility is in vogue he is changing his dialog to get elected and remain a permanent Politian. Let’s expect to see more of this as the election cycle moves forward. The Journal news is wrong. There was not one Ball sign at the conference. Nobody mentioned his name so why bring it up. Please just report the news.
So many losers in 2010 politics, so little space.
1) Lynne Eckhardt—have you noticed her sudden shift in loyalties and beliefs and politics? Well that’s because Leibell promised her that she would be the new Democratic Election Commissioner for Putnam County. Since Leibell’s impending indictment has everyone scared, he didn’t have the juice with the Leg anymore, and the vote went down in flames. Sorry Lynne.
2) Mary Beth Murphy—put up by Leibell to embarass Ball, all she’s done is embarass herself. No thoughts on her own. She’s done like dinner. Ball is going to destroy her at the polls.
3) Leibell—-everyone knows what’s about to happen. Long overdue.
4) Jim Borkowski—put up as another Leibell puppet. Except Leibell has his own serious issues to deal with so Bork is out on his own. No money. No support. No platform. No soldiers. Same fat campaign manager. I’m hearing upcoming things about him in certain circles.
5) Bob Bondi—should have stayed in. he wanted to avoid a strong Vinny, except Vinny has all but abandoned the race.
6) Putnam County residents—for being stuck with such a cast of losers.
I couldn’t realize italian nonetheless it has been amazing.
