WFP: No fracking way

Posted by: Nick Reisman - Posted in Uncategorized on Aug 30, 2010

The Working Families Party is highlighting its opposition to the proposed drilling of natural gas in the Marcellus Shale region of the Southern Tier with a set of bumper stickers on its website.

The first bumper sticker is free. A set of four or more costs $8.

The stickers riff on the formal name of the process used to drill for natural gas—hydraulic fracturing or “hydrofracking.” The process involves drilling for natural gas using a cocktail of water and chemicals to break through the rock.

The Working Families Party is a left-leaning independent party with strong union ties.

Environmentalists and some homeowners in the Southern Tier are opposed to the idea over concerns that it would harm the area’s water quality. The issue has become one New York City residents are paying attention to over concerns the process may harm the city’s watershed. The Senate passed a moratorium bill on hydrofracking earlier this year that would ban drilling until May 2011. The Assembly is yet to take up the measure.

Others are in favor of the drilling, claiming it will infuse the depressed upstate region with much-needed jobs.
