A poll that should make legislators nervous
A new Quinnipiac University poll is out today and it has some bad news for incumbent lawmakers.
New York voters disapprove of the state Legislature’s job by a margin of 75 percent to 15 percent. A majority of voters surveyed—55 percent—said they want to vote out their local state senator.
“State legislators ought to be nervous. More than half of voters say that, to clean house in Albany, they’d even vote against their own senator or Assembly member. That sort of mass movement never has happened – but the Legislature overall gets terrible marks, and New Yorkers, overall, are unhappy with the state of the state,” said Quinnipiac spokesman Maurice Carroll.
In the race for governor, meanwhile, Democrat Andrew Cuomo continues to enjoy a wide lead over his potential Republican opponents.
Cuomo, currently the state’s attorney general, would defeat former Rep. Rick Lazio by a margin of 57 percent to 25 percent if the election were held today. Cuomo would also defeat Buffalo developer Carl Paladino by a similar tally, 60 percent to 23 percent. Cuomo enjoys a high approval rating of 69 percent.
Still, most voters want the frontrunner Cuomo to explain how he would fix the state’s budget woes. Forty-four percent of voters polled say he is “ducking” the issue of the state budget.
In the three-way GOP primary to take on U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., Republicans Bruce Blakeman, Joe DioGuardi and David Malpass do not poll higher than 30 percent in a matchup against Gillibrand. DioGuardi, a former Westchester County congressman, has the highest approval rating of the three—17 percent.
“Is Cuomo’s reticence to speak out simply polite deference to the sitting Governor, David Paterson, or is he ducking his responsibilities? Lots of New Yorkers agree with each of those arguments, but more say ‘ducking,’” Carroll added.
Most voters have not heard of Blakeman, a former Nassau County legislator; Malpass, an economist with Bearn Sterns; or DioGuardi, according to the poll.
The survey polled 1,497 registered voters and has a margin of error of 2.5 percent. The telephone poll was conducted between Aug. 23 and Aug. 29.

Vote for Joseph DioGuardi. He is the only pro-life candidate in the race. Messrs. Blakeman and Malpass are both pro-choice.
