GOP hopefuls in 99th AD spar over illegal immigration, making English NY’s official language
In the waning days of the GOP primary race in the 99th Assembly District, illegal immigration is taking center stage.
Former Southeast Town Justice Jim Borkowski, the Republican nominee, took to the streets of Brewster this morning to tout reforms aimed at tackling the issue. Besides calling for an Arizona-style immigration law and greater cooperation with federal immigration officials, he said he would make English the official state language.
He also called his opponent a hypocrite for supporting the official language measure even as his Bronx veterinary practice advertises iself as catering to Spanish-speaking customers.
“When it comes to making money in the Bronx, Steve Katz does one thing,” Borkowski said of his primary opponent. “And when he wants to get elected he says something completely different.”
Katz said the criticism makes little sense.
“It’s obvious that Mr. Borkowski has shown once again that he is neither a businessman or knows how to create jobs,” said Katz, who lives in Yorktown. “He’s also implying that anyone who speaks Spanish is an illegal alien.”
New York is one of 20 states without an official language. Borkowski said the state is becoming gradually bilingual.
“That’s not the way it works,” said Jim Borkowski, the party’s nominee. “When you come to the United States, you speak our language.”
Brendan Tully, the Democrat from Yorktown who will oppose Tuesday’s GOP primary winner, called the English language proposal a “campaign gimmick” that fails to address real issues.
“If you want to talk about real issues and comprehensive immigration reforms,” said Tully, “we have to talk about solutions that protect our borders, actually promote legal immigration and crack down on employers that break the law and hire undocumented workers.”

I was already leaning towards Borkowski in this race, but this makes up my mind. Katz calls for English as the official language but then he runs a bilingual business. Give me a break!

Interesting how Greg Ball, the self proclaimed Mr. Anti Illegal Immigration, keeps supporting candidates who are weak on the issue.
First he supported Sheriff Don Smith who has completely thrown up his hands when it comes to illegal aliens. Smith even adamantly opposes Ball’s beloved 287G program. But Ball still supported him.
And now this Katz guy. He just doesn’t get it. If Katz felt so strongly about illegal immigration, where was he 2,4 or 6 years ago when the debate was raging? Apparently he was in the Bronx making money from his latino clientele. I disagree with the last poster in that you can’t justify anything. There is no justification for having a bi-lingual business if you truly want English as the official language. You can’t have it both ways. Practice what you preach.

HOPEWELL JUNCTION – Although he has scheduled a number of dates through mid-September to host town hall-style forums throughout the 40th state Senate District, finding Assemblyman Greg Ball, R/C/I-99 at one of those events has been a difficult task.
Ball, a candidate for the 40th state Senate District, was scheduled to appear Saturday, Sept. 4 at Stop & Shop in Hopewell Junction, and was a no-show. He was also scheduled to appear at a number of locations throughout Westchester and Putnam counties prior to that, as part of his “Senate On Your Corner” tour.
Complaints were made that Ball was not appearing at the previously scheduled events but Ball said he has been driving around the district making stops and is always reachable on his cellular phone.
Ball’s Democratic opponent, Westchester County Legislator Mike Kaplowitz, D-4, attended one of Ball’s town hall forums Sept. 3 at Scott’s Corner Market in Pound Ridge.
No one knew Ball had a scheduled event there, Kaplowitz said. When Ball was a no-show, Kaplowitz took the opportunity to speak to the public about his own platform and meet potential voters.

Drove up 22, across 312 to 6 for this debate..only a few Katz signs, hardly any, versus dozens for Jim Borkowski. That means he has no money for signs or no volunteers to put them out. I think Ball is just bilking Katz out of thousands of dollars to fund his own race and letting him lose. Why would he want a well funded guy like Katz in the farm system? Borkowski is easier because then Ball will have an adversary.

Both Borkowski and Katz served the same clientele – non-English speakers: Borkowski as Town of Southeast Judge had a bilingual interpreter in the courtroom and might have non-English speakers as clients of his law firm in White Plains, a very diverse city. And Dr. Katz had a business that served bilingual speakers. I don’t recall the Judge having a sign in his chambers reading – Only English speakers may appear here.

Jeffery sounds like he’s a mouthpiece for Borkowski. Plain and simple, Jim Borkowski is just a wannabee. Borkowski has been sucking Leibell’s toes to get anything.
This with the help of his sidekick rotund Rob (Ball’s former chief of staff) . First he thought Vinny was going to give him the Senate slot and then he flipped on him and gave it to Mary Beth Murphy.
So he now gets the crumbs’ of the Assembly slot. What successful attorney would give up a practice for a job that starts at $ 79,500? Ooops! I forgot the extra’s you can get like Vinny’s big house, Bruno’s horse farm. Let’s not forget how lobbyist money flows into your law firms as legal fees and then there are those non-profit entities. Borkowski wants to play in this league. He’s no community activist or has any civic concerns nor does he have any commitment to conservative ideology. If he did then he would never accepted the ” Working Family” line in the Sheriff’s race.
Katz may not be the best, but a least he’s not a political insider. As far as Greg Ball’s involvement this year’s election is continuation of the power struggle to the death between Ball and Leibell. So Murphy, Borkowski, Katz and O”Dell are just pawns in this game. Albany is corrupt and Leibell, Bruno etc have all been major GOP players.
Rudy Giuliani as US Attorney once said “follow the money to find the truth”. Mary Beth Murphy gets $ 75,000 from Senate Republican Committee. So where is Borkowski getting his money for TV? Take a look a Borkowski’s July Disbursements filing. This inability to raise money shows he has no popular support. He is simply Vinnie’s puppet!

Just an observation. I, too, have seen more Borkowski signs than those for Mr. Katz. That being said, signs don’t vote.

And by the way, there are also more Borkowski signs in Yorktown, Somers, and Putnam Lake, all along Route 202 and Route 22…come to think of it, more Mary Beth Murphy signs too…maybe that’s because every time someone goes to put out a Nan Hayworth sign, they put up the other two…because we work together. Every time I see a Greg Ball sign, there’s no Katz sign.
For all that money Katz is donating you would think Ball could at least help put up his signs? But no, in the end, its all about Ball. Like I said, it seems to me like Ball wants Katz to loose, this way, he can have an adversary in Borkowski in Albany, saying look, Borkowski is blocking my this initiative, and my that initiative. Lauren Pistone is a two faced liar. After Ball broke up with her she went crying to the Murphy campaign and all of Greg’s enemies telling them about what a terrible person she thought he was. She even joined a group supporting Mary Beth Murphy on facebook.
But then she was paid off by Greg through Steve Katz. Her next move was to allege that the Murphy campaign reached out to her for dirt on Greg when the exact opposite was true.
