Lazio takes Cuomo commercial and turns it around on him (update)

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo remains an Albany insider, despite a splashy campaign commercial pledging otherwise. That’s the gist of a new ad from Republican Rick Lazio, who re-edited a television ad of Cuomo’s to show that the current attorney general is a product of Albany.

The ad uses narration from Cuomo’s TV ad, but displays black-and-white pictures of prominent scandal-scarred Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada, D-Bronx, former Gov. Eliot Spitzer and ex-Comptroller Alan Hevesi.

From the Lazio campaign: “Andrew Cuomo recently released an advertisement touting his plan to “clean up Albany.” After 29 years as a product of Albany, we here at Team Lazio thought it was important to offer a more truthful version of Andrew Cuomo’s ad.”

It’s worth noting that Lazio, who faces a Sept. 14 primary against Carl Paladino, has not unleashed any critical ads of the Buffalo developer.

Here’s the Lazio video, “Spin vs. Truth,” which was posted this morning.

Update: The Democrats sent over their response, bashing the video.

“Nobody has ever accused Rick Lazio of being a stickler for accuracy and his latest video shows why,” said Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs. “What do Spitzer, Espada and Hevesi have in common? They’ve all be investigated by Attorney General Cuomo. If Mr. Lazio wanted to be honest, his video would have reflected that fact.”
