A Hastings Democrat announced she was running for the Board of Legislators and promised to defend against County Executive Rob Astorino’s budget cuts.
MaryJane Shimsky, a community relations director for outgoing Asseemblyman Richard Brodsky, is running for the 12th legislative district seat that will be vacated by Legislator Tom Abinanti who will be joining the state Assembly on Jan. 1.
“I want to do everything I can to serve Greenburgh residents and ensure Democratic ideals survive these challenging times,” Shimsky said in an announcement. “We need to make sure the Republican County Executive is not taking services, such as neighborhood health centers, away from Greenburgh’s women and children. We have to care for the most vulnerable among us while not making further demands on our hard- pressed homeowners, most of whom cannot afford higher taxes. We need to apply core Democratic values to today’s economic crisis.”
Board of Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins, D-Yonkers, must call for a special election within 90 days of Abinanti’s departure.
In her role with Brodsky’s office, Shimsky represented the Assemblyman at community meetings, assisting constituents, and acting as liaison to local governments. She has also served as vice chair of the Westchester County Democratic Committee since 2008, served as chair of the Hastings Democratic Committee for six years and as vice chair for two years. She is a member of he Greenburgh Democratic Party.
