Mount Vernon Comptroller announces mayoral bid

7

Mount Vernon Comptroller Maureen Walker informed The Journal News yesterday that she will seek the Democratic nomination for mayor, likely pitting her against current Mayor Clinton Young, who is in the fourth year of his first term.

“Mount Vernon needs bold, innovative and capable leadership.  Leaders who are not influenced by special interest groups; leaders who are not afraid to make the tough decisions needed; leaders who will place the best interest of the city above politics,” Walker wrote in her press release.

Feb 24, 2011

I have decided to seek the democratic nomination for Mayor of Mount Vernon at the upcoming primary elections to be held on September 13, 2011.  As the City Comptroller, I have made the resources of the Comptroller’s Office readily accessible to all residents and businesses. I have also brought efficiency, effectiveness, and responsiveness to my office resulting in an extended and unprecedented period of financial stability to the City of Mount Vernon.  However, this financial stability has, unfortunately, not transcribed into the advancement of our city and its residents from a quality of life perspective.  It appears that our city is the victim of partisan politics which has resulted in a leadership vacuum and a decline in our quality of life.

The City of Mount Vernon is now standing at the crossroads between crisis and hope, between economic decline and advancement opportunities, between past failures and future prosperity.  We must make wise choices if we are to steer our city out of the dangerous riptide it has been led into.  Restoring pride in our city, providing our residents with the services they deserve and continuing to place people above politics will be my primary objectives.

Mount Vernon needs bold, innovative and capable leadership.  Leaders who are not influenced by special interest groups; leaders who are not afraid to make the tough decisions needed; leaders who will place the best interest of the city above politics.  I represent that leadership.  I am duly qualified and experienced and possess the independence, strength and know-how to chart our city into a brighter tomorrow.  I am asking our residents to join me and together we can make our city government more professional, more efficient, more responsive and more accessible to our residents and businesses.

Sincerely yours,
Maureen Walker

  1. Hmmmm! This is very interesting. Now I understand why Comptroller Walker has had a part in blocking Memorial Field and other development projects within The City of Mount Vernon

She obviously will to do anything to keep Mayor Young from looking good. I guess some people will do whatever it takes to become mayor

  2. She is the one who is doggedly trying to sell a city owned property valued at $120k for just $20k to a friend and political supporter who is a tax deadbeat and owes the city over $130k in taxes.

  3. Funny thing, her office has 7 people making $90k or more including 2 chief accountants at $128k/year (not a CPA among them) and yet they all were unable to calculate the school taxes last year and the bills went out three weeks late. Ultimately, the assessor had to do the calculations for Walker and her staff.

  4. @ Sal – How is Young a disappointment? This man has moved this city past a culture of corruption that has plagued Mount Vernon for years. The country is experiencing the worst economy since the great depression, but Mount Vernon is currently experiencing more development projects than they have had in the past thirty years.

Crime is at an all time low, the building department if the best it’s been in years, the planning commissioner is top notch, the police commissioner was brought in from the DEA and I could go on and on. Please tell me your joking….

  5. Maureen Walker is a part-time Comptroller (earning 128,000 a year) and now she wants to be Mayor? This must be a practical joke that somebody is playing on the Journal News. She leaves work at noon three days a week to teach an accounting class at Iona College. Even when she doesn’t teach she comes in around 9 and leaves by 4.
