Denis Hughes, president of New York State AFL-CIO, had kind words this morning for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to sped up new teacher evaluations through the state Department of Education, rather than nixing a law that bases teacher layoffs on seniority.
AFL-CIO on Monday ripped the “last in, first out” policy.
“Governor Cuomo’s approach on seniority shows leadership, foresight and a willingness to acknowledge the intricacies of the issue,” Hughes said today. “His understanding that an objective evaluation process needs to be part of any future agreement is a significant step in the right direction. While there is still a long way to go, and many issues to address, the New York State AFL-CIO is heartened by the Governor’s intelligent approach to this very important issue.”
