Outcries on Yonkers’ reduced state education aid

State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, and students in the Yonkers Public Schools announced their displeasure today with $32.5 million in proposed reductions to state education for the city’s schools.

Stewart-Cousins wrote to Senate majority leader Dean Skelos, a Republican, asking him restore the money proposed to be cut and to have the Legislature adopt two Yonkers school funding bills she sponsored last year for pre-kindergarten and increased enrollment. Her letter follows below.

Meanwhile, students in the Yonkers Public Schools announced a Thursday morning rally at 7 a.m. in Getty Square to protest the cuts to the schools that would be necessary if state leaders adopt the proposed cuts to the city’s state school aid.

The students expect to rally in Getty Square and then march to City Hall.

  1. just the facts on

clearly andrea has “no juice” she is a democrat..she is a state senator..nice lady
very nice..but….she is in the minority as is suzi oppenheimer and jeff klein..they
are totally without influence…and are frankly afraid to advocate for higher taxes
on those making over a million a year..because they don’t want to be portrayed
as business unfriendly….but no multi millionaire is going to leave new york because
he has to pay a slightly higher state income tax..which he can deduct on his federal
income tax return…and this has nothing whatever to do with small business owners
whose taxable income is 2-3-4 hundred thousand….these democrats are cop out artists
just like their federal counterparts who won’t deal with social security medicare and
the defense budget…and as for the governor..he unlike his dad wants to be president
so raising taxes is the last thing a liberal democrat from new york wants to do..but
whether its state finances or federal revenues have to be increased to pay for what
is already commited….like it or not…taxes have to go up
