State officials quietly put out public notices this afternoon that they plan to downsize or close eight juvenile justice facilities in the state.
Four are closing: the Tryon GIrls Center in Fulton County; the Allen Residential Center in Delaware County; the Industry Secure Facility in Monroe County; and the Harriet Tubman Residential Center in Auburn, Cayuga County.
Four are being downsized: the Finger Lakes Residential Center in Tompkins County; the Industry Limited Secure Center in Rush; The Youth Leadership Academy in Delaware County; and Highland Residential Center in Ulster County.
The move comes as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to reduce the number of empty beds at the youth detention facilities by 377 and and save roughly $50 million over the next two years. State officials said the move will mean the reduction of about 400 positions, but it’s unclear how many people will be laid off at each facility.
