GOP Sen. Stephen Saland of Poughkeepsie, the 32nd vote for the same-sex marriage bill the Senate passed last Friday, will speak with the Poughkeepsie Journal Editorial Board at 3 p.m. Saland voted no on gay-marriage legislation in 2009 and, after working with other senators and Gov. Andrew Cuomo on religious protections, voted in favor of the legislation. Four Republicans, including Saland and Sen. Jim Alesi, R-Perinton, Monroe County, voted for the bill, which passed 33-29.
The Assembly previously passed the bill, and Andrew Cuomo signed it into law at 11:55 p.m. Friday. The law takes effect July 24.
