Cuomo To Sign Tax-Cap Bill in Pleasantville

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in Uncategorized on Jun 29, 2011

Gov. Andrew Cuomo tomorrow will turn his attention to his other prominent accomplishment of the legislative session—the passage of a property-tax cap—when he holds a ceremonial bill signing in Pleasantville, Westchester County.

The 1:30 p.m. event will be held in the county with the highest property taxes in the country, and also the governor’s home county. He lives in nearby New Castle.

The bill was passed Friday and already has been signed. Cuomo had to sign it because it was tied to rent-control laws for New York City and its suburbs and those expired Friday.

Polls have shown that the property-tax cap was the top issue for voters this legislative session, which ended Friday, surpassing the legalization of same-sex marriage and ethics reform. Cuomo also got those passed, as well.

Cuomo made a tax cap a hallmark of his campaign last year, saying New Yorkers can no longer be among the highest taxed states in the country. The cap will limit the growth in taxes to 2 percent a year or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower, the most stringent tax cap in the country.

Where will he be signing the bill allowing for school districts to bond 15 billion dollars on the backs of the taxpayer, thus neutralizing any positive effect of the tax cap.
