Sen. Diane Savino, a member of the Independent Democratic Conference, is a co-sponsor of a bill that would allow doctors to prescribe the drug to ill patients as a pain reliever. In her letter, she asks Cuomo to support the bill “and give doctors one more tool to manage pain and alleviate suffering for thousands of New Yorkers.”
“This measure would give seriously ill patients the ability to purchase the drug through a registered dispensing facility with a physician’s approval,” Savino wrote. “The program would be tightly controlled. All patients would be required to register with the state Health Department, and be permitted to have no more than 2.5 ounces at a time.”
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Tom Duane, D-Manhattan, and Assembly Health Chairman Richard Gottfried, also a Manhattan Democrat.
