Savino: Legalize pot! (for medicinal purposes)

A Staten Island senator hailed New Jersey’s implementation of a law legalizing marijuana for medicinal use, writing a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo urging him to get behind the cause.

Sen. Diane Savino, a member of the Independent Democratic Conference, is a co-sponsor of a bill that would allow doctors to prescribe the drug to ill patients as a pain reliever. In her letter, she asks Cuomo to support the bill “and give doctors one more tool to manage pain and alleviate suffering for thousands of New Yorkers.”

“This measure would give seriously ill patients the ability to purchase the drug through a registered dispensing facility with a physician’s approval,” Savino wrote. “The program would be tightly controlled. All patients would be required to register with the state Health Department, and be permitted to have no more than 2.5 ounces at a time.”

The bill is sponsored by Sen. Tom Duane, D-Manhattan, and Assembly Health Chairman Richard Gottfried, also a Manhattan Democrat.

Next the Democrats will mandate that heath insurers pay for mary jane and blow so that taxpayers in general will pay for it all through higher health premiums.

  2. The War on Drugs failed $1 Trillion ago! This money could have been used for outreach programs to clean up the bad end of drug abuse by providing free HIV testing, free rehab, and clean needles. Harmless drugs like marijuana could be legalized to help boost our damaged economy. Cannabis can provide hemp for countless natural recourses and the tax revenue from sales alone would pull every state in our country out of the red! Vote Teapot, PASS IT, and legalize it. Medicaid people already get free HIV testing, free rehab, and on and on. Free everything. Now you want them to get free marijuana and bill it to me.

  4. As long as it has to be paid for by the individual and NOT via the insurance companies then I am all for it and the income it will produce for the state however, I feel that half the tax money collected should go to Rehabs to help people caught up in addication and alcoholism.
I agree that neither medicaid nor insurance companies should pay for it. There are too many shamsters out there who will run to a dr. and say I have pain..ok here’s some marijuana for you..then they will sell it to someone who wants it to get high.

Jesus said to do unto others as we would have them do unto us, so it’s time to say a big THANK YOU to Governor Christie for opening up this opportunity to the people of New Jersey. We can send Governor Christie an email at and show him our support for this decision!

To those concerned about insurance costs for marijuana: Marijuana can be provided at much LOWER COST than most current pharmaceuticals for treatment of pain, nausea, and depression. This will be a cost-saver; let’s be glad that this is becoming more available!

  7. would somebody please get rid of Sheriff Don Smith already? The comedy show is over.
