The local lawmakers who represent downtown Manhattan where the Occupy Wall Street movement has overtaken Zuccotti Park wrote a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg today asking him to balance the rights of the protesters with the needs of the residents who live in the neighborhood.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, who represents the area, told reporters today that he understands the protesters’ right to free speech, but people who live in the neighborhood also have rights.
“I believe very strongly in the first amendment right to speak out. And likewise, I believe very strongly in people’s right to occupy their homes, their businesses and free movement of traffic within the area,” he said.
Here’s the letter.
