Cortlandt Democratic Councilman and congressional candidate Rich Becker is calling on Rep.Nan Hayworth, R-Mount Kisco, to return money raised through a joint fundraising committee with Rep. Michael Grimm, a Staten Island Republican.
Grimm, Becker’s campaign points out, has come under scrutiny for past fundraising practices, although Grimm says he has done nothing wrong.
But, Becker argues, Hayworth should return more than $62,000 she received from the joint committee, which also benefits four other members of Congress. He pointed to her calls in 2010 for Rep. John Hall, the man she eventually defeated, to return money he received from a PAC associated with Rep. Charles Rangel. A fellow Democrat, Rangel was eventually censured by the House for violating ethics rules.
“Nan Hayworth should live up to the standards she sets for others,” Becker said in a statement. “Just as Hayworth demanded that John Hall return contribution from a PAC linked to a congressman under investigation, so too should she donate to charity the more than $62,000 she raised in partnership with scandal-tarred Rep. Grimm.”
To be fair, the money Grimm has faced questions about was raised in 2010. The committee he, Hayworth and others share was formed in 2011.
At a town hall meeting in Somers recently, Hayworth said her fundraising is transparent and she has no fears about the Grimm matter.
Becker’s letter Hayworth is below. He is one of five Democrats seeking to unseat Hayworth.
