Rep. Nita Lowey is making calls today to senior House Democrats expressing her interest in becoming the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee in the next Congress, according to a source close to her.
Earlier today, the lawmaker who currently hold that post, Rep. Norm Dicks of Washington state, announced he is retiring at the end of this year.
Lowey currently ranks fourth in seniority among Democrats on the panel.
The second ranking Democrat, Rep. Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, faces a tough primary battle this year against Rep. Dennis Kucinich because of redistricting.
The third ranking Democrat on the committee is Rep. Peter Visclosky of Indiana.
Should Lowey win the backing of her colleagues to take over the top spot, she would assume the post in January of next year.
Of course, Lowey needs to win re-election in November to get to that point. A resident of Harrison, the 74-year-old lawmaker is serving her 12th term in Congress.
