Photos Surface of More Pulled Pork

The Peekskill American Legion post wasn’t the only group to be served a side of pulled pork, as it turns out.

Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo vetoed 122 member-item grants within the state budget that had been directed to one recipient in previous years but was redirected to another this year. He said those grants constituted new member items (known as “pork”), which he had opposed putting in the spending plan.

Among those vetoed was an $18,000 grant to the Peekskill American Legion that Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson, Putnam County, had presented in the form of an oversized check a month before the budget was passed.

Now, The Daily Cortlandt reports that a $20,000 member item to Teatown Lake Reservation in Yorktown was also among Cuomo’s vetoes. And again, Ball had already presented an oversized check to the camp back in January. (Assemblyman Robert Castelli, R-Goldens Bridge, and Assemblywoman Sandra Galef, D-Ossining, were also present for the photo op, shown at left.)

Ball told The Daily Cortlandt that the funding for both the American Legion and the Teatown Lake Reservation would be restored in the form of other available grants, but didn’t specify exactly which ones. Per the website, he said: “So we now are going to go back and work with grants that are available from those budgets, and new dollars that are available from capital grants to make sure that we still take care of the money. And honestly, it’s a pretty easy process, it just takes paperwork.”

Ball’s Democratic opponent, Justin Wagner, knocked him for the premature pork. Wagner is running for Ball’s seat in the November general election.

“(Ball) posed for press pictures with an oversized check that turns out to have no money standing behind it,” Wagner said in a statement. “Handing out a check when no money has yet to be appropriated is the height of irresponsibility and is exactly the type of self-promotion that voters are tired of.”

Meanwhile, the treasurer of the Peekskill American Legion placed the blame on Cuomo in an email last week.

“The only thing the governor has succeeded in doing is to hurt another veteran’s program for those who served us all,” Jerry O’Shaughnessy, treasurer of the Peekskill post, wrote. “Thanks Mr Cuomo.”

(And thanks to a reader for the headline inspiration.)

  1. Why single out Ball when they’re ALL in on it? Wagner is a hypocrite who would be right in the middle of that “pork” photo had he the opportunity.

  2. I think Ball was singled out because the check says “Senator Greg Ball” in big letters, because Ball put out a press release about it… Etc

  3. And which one of them in Albany hands out these checks anonymously and without a press release? Try to employ some intelligence.

  4. Committee MUST support Ball on

Wrong. Leibell’s hard work has resulted in Leibell being exactly where he remains today, in federal prison. Of course, nobody knew Leibell nor was friends with him nor plotted with him nor knew what he was up to.

    “Vinny had us ALL fooled”.

  5. Spend and Spend Ball on

Was this money leibell money or was it Balls money or was it Liebells money that Ball put his name on it?

  6. Suuuuueeeeyyyyy. Greg Ball is the Porky Pig of the NYS Senate. I thought that the Tea Baggers were against pork. Or, is that just campaign rhetoric?
