Last night was the 112th Legislative Correspondents Association Show in Albany, an annual tradition where current and former Capitol reporters roast the state’s politicos via song and playful skits.
And as part of that tradition, some of the subjects get their chance to respond at the end of the night. That produced this gem — a six-minute video response from Sen. Mike Gianaris, D-Queens, who is leading the Senate Democrats’ reelection efforts for 2012.
The video highlights a (satirical) week in Gianaris’ ultimately unsuccessful push for an independent redistricting process for 2012. (If you recall, the Legislature and Gov. Andrew Cuomo agreed to pass lawmaker-drawn maps this year in exchange for an appointee-driven process beginning in 2022.)
It features a bevy of cameos, including ones from former Gov. David Paterson (who, as the video notes, is credited at “Fred Armisen”); former New York City mayor Ed Koch; former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato; state Sens. Daniel Squadron, Liz Krueger, Jose Peralta and Kevin Parker; and NY1 reporter Zach Fink.
Here’s the video response from Gianaris, which got huge laughs. There were also well-received rebuttals from state GOP Chairman Ed Cox (who performed live for almost 20 minutes, at one point donning a Richard Nixon mask) and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (who, along with his top aides, participated in a very funny video response.) We’ll post footage of the other rebuttals as it rolls in.
Disclaimer: There’s a salty word or two in this video.
