Ball Backs Cuomo On Teacher Evaluations

Put Sen. Greg Ball in the “yes” category when it comes to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to limit the public’s access to teacher evaluations.

Ball, R-Patterson, Putnam County, said Cuomo’s bill strikes the right balance between disclosure and privacy.

“The final agreement is a good one,” Ball said. “I think that the parents should certainly have access to the evaluations, but I also appreciate the concerns of especially special-needs teachers being unfairly compared and not having a fair or equitable evaluation across the board.”

“So it’s a balancing act,” he continued, “and I think this current agreement attempts to rectify the problem.”

Ball said he couldn’t say for sure if there would be a vote in the Senate on the Cuomo’s bill, but it thought it was a strong possibility. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County, hasn’t said whether the conference would vote on the bill before session ends tomorrow.

Sen. Thomas O’Mara, R-Elmira, said he was still undecided.

“I think this a better balance than the outright full disclosure, but I have concerns about the parents right to know and I agree that there will be some chaos that would ensue from the disclosure of this,” O’Mara said.
