YONKERS — A new group calling for an extension of City Council term limits will rally at City Hall Monday to kick off its petition drive to put the issue up for referendum this year.
The event is scheduled for noon at the plaza outside 40 S. Broadway.
The Yonkers Committee for Term Limits is seeking a ballot proposition to allow council members to run for a third term, saying the change would bring Yonkers in line with the 12-year limits in place for the Westchester County Board of Legislators and the New York City Council.
In Yonkers, council members are currently limited to two terms, or eight consecutive years in office. Term limits became law in Yonkers after being approved by voters in a 1994 referendum, then upheld in 2001.
The new committee argues that long-term efforts to improve the city’s troubled finances, rehabilitate its deteriorating schools and oversee major economic development projects call for lengthier terms on the council.
The group said it intends to propose extending term limits “democratically”—through a petition drive and subsequent ballot proposition in 2012, a year before any affected election.
In New York City, the City Council approved controversial term-limits legislation in October 2008, allowing Mayor Michael Bloomberg to seek a third term after two voter referendums had imposed a limit of two terms.
The idea of tossing the two-term limit came up on the Yonkers council as recently as 2009 but no reforms apparently came of that discussion.
