U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, endorsed the campaign of freshman state Sen. David Carlucci today, marking the first member of a breakaway state Senate caucus to be backed by the influential Democrat.

Carlucci’s campaign unveiled the endorsement today. A Democrat from Clarkstown, Rockland County, Carlucci (pictured) is one of four members of the Independent Democratic Conference, a group of state senators who do not conference with the main Democratic caucus.

“Senator Carlucci has always put middle-class families first and has a strong record of getting things done,” Schumer said in a statement released by Carlucci’s campaign. “Hudson Valley residents know they have a fighter in Albany who is a real leader on the issues that matter to working families and seniors.”

Carlucci, who defeated Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef in 2010 for the Senate seat, now faces a challenge from Republican Janis Castaldi, a former village trustee in Ossining, Westchester County.
