The state Independence Party is running this ad against Democratic Senate candidate Terry Gipson, saying that Gipson would join with the state teacher’s union in seeking a repeal of the property-tax cap.
The Independence Party is backing Sen. Stephen Saland, R-Poughkeepsie. Saland has touted the property-tax cap and his working relationship with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat who pushed for the tax cap last year.
Cuomo’s office has warned that candidates running against the tax cap would be doing so at their peril, particularly in the suburbs where taxes and the economy are the top issues.
NYSUT said it will sue to overturn the tax cap, and it plans to pump money into Democratic candidates who they endorsed.
“Taxpayers need Governor Cuomo’s tax cap. The special interests need Terry Gipson,” the ad states.
