Death Toll In NY Rises To 26

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today that the death toll from Hurricane Sandy grew to 26.

The majority are in New York City, but there were four deaths in the lower Hudson Valley, as well as one in Ulster County, attributed to the storm.

Cuomo toured by helicopter today the damage in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County.

“It is very disturbing and sad and troubling to see the amount of damage done and the lives that have been disrupted all across the region,” Cuomo said at a noon briefing.

Cuomo is the former HUD secretary, so he’s toured disaster areas as part of the Clinton administration. But he said the water pouring into New York City during the height of the storm on Monday was like nothing he’s seen.

“I’ve never seen New York like that before. I’ve seen other parts of the country like that,” Cuomo said.

The number of power outages in the state continue to fall, albeit slowly: down to 1.9 million as of 2 p.m.
