GOP Hits Di Carlo For Silence Over Rabbi’s Claims That Sandy Was Result Of Same-Sex Marriage

Rabbi Noson Leiter, the head of the Rockland County-based Orthodox Jewish advocacy group Torah Jews for Decency, last week said that Superstorm Sandy is God’s response to same-sex marriage in New York.

“The Lord will not bring another flood to destroy the entire world, but he could punish particular areas with a flood, and if we look at the same-gender marriage recognition movement that’s occurring, that certainly is a message for us to learn,” Leiter said Oct. 30 on Crosstalk, which is part of Christian Information Radio.

“We, not just the bad people, but the good people, have to learn that the Lord does watch what we do and if we don’t shape up he will deliver divine justice.” Leiter continued.

Later, he said, that lower Manhattan is ““one of the national centers of homosexuality.”

Conservative Party Senate candidate Neil Di Carlo is running on an anti-gay-marriage platform against Sen. Stephen Saland, R-Poughkeepsie, and he was on the show with Leiter.

Republicans are calling on Di Carlo to condemn the rabbi’s comments. So far, he hasn’t. According to the Daily News, which reported on the issue today, Di Carlo put the blame on politics.

Former Gov. George Pataki criticized Di Carlo, who lives in Brewster, Putnam County. Pataki is also a Putnam County resident.

“It’s simply incomprehensible that anyone could attribute the devastation and loss of life caused by Hurricane Sandy to divine retribution against the New York state Legislature,” Pataki said in a statement. “It’s like blaming America’s belief in freedom for the attacks of September 11th. These remarks, which were made in support of State Senate candidate Neil DiCarlo are offensive and disgraceful – he has a responsibility to repudiate them.”

Senate Republican spokesman Scott Reif also knocked Di Carlo. Republicans are concerned that Di Carlo could split tomorrow’s vote for Saland and help Democrat Terry Gipson. Saland was one of four Senate Republicans to back same-sex marriage last year.

“No matter what political party we belong to, I think we can all agree that these disgraceful comments tell us everything we need to know about who Neil DiCarlo really is,” Reif said.
